  • QLD Watercooled Minority

Having visited the VW Nationals in Sydney in May this year and today's VW Action Day, I am disappointed at the ratio of air-cooled compared to water-cooled exposure.

Let's face it, whilst I genuinely appreciate anything old-school, ( I occasionally drive my mate's '57 Chev), the old Beetles and Kombis are irrelevant to the modern vehicles that most of us on this forum drive, not to mention the "down the nose" attitude of many air-cooled enthusiasts to any VW that uses water to stay COOL.

A dedicated event similar to the professional event that our air-cooled partners put on is warranted for water-cooled VWs.

Just tripped while getting down from my soap box, thoughts anyone........

yep- took the words out of my mouth. Was just thinking the other day that an Audi / VW / Skoda specific show in SE Qld would be cool. Heaps for the aircooled guys but not much for everyone else.......will anyone show if we organize one though?

I'm with you on this one, and a few of us are really pushing for a modern VW society. The recurring problem in my head is that there just aren't enough VAG cars with people who actually care about them, most of them are driven by people who like the comfort or convenience, and the car just so happens to have a VW/Skoda badge on it. I'm willing to push the even though, I'd be happy to make up flyers/cards and literally drop one on every VAG car I see.

Come along to the Morningside RSL this Wednesday for the monthly VWDCQ meeting, we're trying to build the Watercooled presence.

The air-cooled / water-cooled thing reminds me of when my father was a member of the Jaguar Owners Club. They started an IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) chapter to disseminate them form the live rear end crowd. I'm not suggesting anything as strange as that, but these days the only thing that is shared, other than automotive passion, is the VW badge.

I'm surprised it wasn't tweed wearers and non-tweed wearers.

didn't say you had to drive.

                  flights are cheap.

and SEDF is is aussie VAG at it's best.

Yeah, it was funny today to see water-cooled split into 3 groups but they had every air cooled category under the sun... I love seeing people who care aout their car but it has to go both ways, they don't seem to give two s$!ts...

                      Another pun, dad?

The only thing we can do is work together, make the brand/community known to drivers and we can build a stronger following.

There are plenty of VW events which watercooled cars are invited to enter but most people fail to do so. In Queensland you have the Warwick drags in 3 weeks time. Ive entered and will be driving up from Sydney to compete. How many Queenslanders have entered the Watercooled section of the drags? There is also a show and shine part to the show that you can enter. Unfortunately Portland looks like its been canceled which dissapoints me as I enjoyed driving down for the event there but due to a lack of support from the VW community (especially the lack of watercooled entrants) it was no longer financially viable to keep it going. If we dont support every event thats put on then people wont be hosting events anymore, at least the air-cooled guys still come in decent numbers and are more patriotic to the badge than what most watercooled owners are.

                          I agree with Maca.
We just need to get more people to come to the meetings so we can push for the brand awareness and get togethers we have.

Also we are planning more get togethers and things, there are at least 2 in October and i am organising a drive in November.

I had a good day yesterday at Action, sure it sucks that they seem to sometimes not give much thought to the watercooled stuff but we also haven't been putting the effort into attending events for the number of years that they have. You also have to realise that most of the aircooled cars there are far older which means more work to keep them driving around in terms of maintenance and repairs. I think that for this reason that it's clear that they do have passion for Volkswagens, but mostly for their own type of car. I can understand that seeing a bunch of newer cars that are (comparably/seemingly) effortless to keep on the road could potentially make them doubt our commitment.

                            This is understandable.

Most new 'sporty' VWs I see I try to get a look or wave or nod or something from, but they all seem to not take any notice of other VWs. To me this is disheartening.

I'm passionate about VWs old and new, I don't have an aircooled car but I can definitely appreciate them.

Which car were you in Brimway?

I'd agree, but for Warwick most of us will be attending an event that we'd planned to go to earlier but was postponed. It is an event that a few people have put a lot of effort into and have worked really hard towards getting Volkswagens a good allocation of space and recognition in prize categories. It's unfortunate that Warwick falls on the same day, otherwise I'd have (and I'm sure several others would have too) attended.

Sorry I couldnt make it out yesterday, was OS & only got back after mid day, or else we would have had a couple of other watercoolers on display.

I know Dom was looking to see if he could get something going in SE QLD - but certainly it has to start somewhere. I was a member of the VWDCQ for many, many years, So I can understand how it all works (shows etc).

Anyway, if anyone wants to have a get together / meeting to discuss options, we would certainly be happy to help out & support.
