here is a web site that sets out a couple of different types of rally's.

the only problem with this is u would need to have someone at each check point. i like this one though,

"Opt for a gimmick rally for a low-key, goofy event. At checkpoints teams are given directions designed to test their ability to solve riddles, decipher clues or find obscure items such as the most turkey-shaped signs in a certain area."

The dandenongs and surrounds could be a good location for this type of event.

The Dandenongs was probably the most "used" spot for the sort of car rallies that I'm referring to. The end of the rally would usually be a park somewhere with BBQ's etc.

It comes down to working out a route from A to B. Break it up into timed segments and then look for "obscure" or challenging points of interest along the way. Each car must have a driver and a navigator. It's also important to make sure that stopping points along the way must be safe for not only participants but also other traffic i.e. it's no good having a stopping point just around a blind turn. One might cause an accident. Finally, for those who might get lost, there is an envelope provided to all participants with the final destination. Opening the envelope means you're out of the game. You don't necessarily have to have people stationed along the route. You might, for example, provide a clue that requires going into a shop to buy something specific. The shopkeeper will co-operate because he/she is selling stuff.

this sounds like a fantastic idea!

how about some where around or thru the latrobe valley area. the rally can go thru walhalla, around power stations and thru the hills. plenty of different things to find and a variety of scenery and some windy roads to keep it entertaining...

                just a thought...

as nice as the scenery is down there. It's a 2 hour drive for most people to get there, let alone the longer distances between 'stops' cause points of interest would be further apart. Also harder to organise because of the same reasons.

if it's locally, that way the organisers can map out a route, or selected points of interest, without having to drive all over the shop, because the points would (or could) be closer together (because there are more things that are potential points of interesting, per area).

also hopefully we'd have more people if it was based in melbourne, rather than out in the valley.
