  • Hi Guys,

Thanks for letting my run my STI at your dyno day. It was good to meet another bunch of enthusiasts
I was certainly impressed with the quality of the cars there too. Its a pity I arrrived too late to see the HPA R32 as I have always been keen to see under the bonnet after hearing so much about (yes even on Subaru forums).

I think like a lot of the guys I was Impressed with Milka V8 beast, even though my last two cars have been quite modified turbo 4's its hard to deny that the V8s have everyone covered in the sound department. I think I have a vid of this or two which I might put up on youtube later
Time to sell my car. I'm still trying to decide between a later model A3 Quattro or S3 quattro, if the R20 was out it would be a different story of course. I did check the RS6 prices as suggested but I won't get this past the wife at this stage
    Cheers

    Mark

        Gday mate

if your going to modify the car, the S3 is the better starting package, as the 20v in them has stronger internals (not that the stock 20v internals are weak!) and a bigger turbo (K04 as apposed to a K03 )

you pulled some seriously nice numbers!

K04 wouldn't be on there for very long I fear. With the S3 I have the better brakes and suspension and ED20 internals so it comes down to whether the 15k difference can be better spent on upgrades which I would need to do anyway. I'd like to keep the internals stock however I'm a bit over pulling engines apart if it can be avoided. If I see an S3 at the right price in ibis white it would be hard to resist

either way, the above still applies, just change the engine name

                • Just got down to Sydney, just a couple of days too late!

Anyway, looks like it was a great day.

If you look & concentrate on the "derived" torque figures, that probably tells a much bigger picture than looking at the peak KW outputs.

                  Paolob 284nm Pirelli GTI
                  GTTom 216nm 1.4 twincharger
                  WindyZZ 268nm R32
                  GLDGti 132nm MK1
                  JohnC 346nm MKV with K04
                  Bujna 258nm MKIV 1.8T GTI

GTTom, I will check with the mainline figures when I get back to the office, but from memory, yours looks pretty much right.

Paolob - I would check your car for misfires - the torque is way down & if you have those codes then you should be able to get it sorted (refer thread below in MK5 forum on misfires)

WindyZZ - good torque numbers from a NA motor

JohnC - KW's should be up a bit, but look at the torque difference over the other cars - killer!

Bujna - thats an awesome torque figure from a MK5!

The Mainline dyno's are pretty good, pretty repeatable - we used one extensively this year & had Todd come up & train us on it - good stuff!

Thanks for the explanation guyH, But I don't seem to understand by what you means 'Derived' torque figures. Is that just a normal torque figure at the wheel ?

and how looking at the torque will tell bigger picture then peak KW outputs.

Sorry I'm just n00b My first Time @ dyno so I have no idea at all

                    Thanks for the info

                    • Thanks Guy.

I was hoping I'd get around 190, but just waited to see what came up. I hate speculating. Car sat idle for 20 minutes before hand in the sun, so heat may have played a part.

I had some 104 Ron fuel there for the day, but the file wasn't up on the APR server. Derek was going to see what he could do. Good to know what the 98 does anyway as that's what it always runs.

Good luck at EC. Hope it goes well.

You can't measure torque accurately at the wheel because it's affected by gearing - lower gears produce higher torque figures. My understanding of what happens is that they do is measure the power, and then from knowledge of various aspects of the car's drivetrain, mathemetically derive the torque that the engine is producing.

One of my pet peeves with dyno graphs is power/torque plotted against km/h - it's meaningless because it only gives you figures for one particular gear. I much prefer seeing graphs where the power and torque are plotted against engine revs. Knowing the gear and km/h per 1,000rpm, you can relatively simply derive a power/torque vs rpm graph if you've got access to all the data points - something that only the dyno computer has...
                        Nothing to see here...

                          Thanks Guy,

                          It's ok, i know you meant mk4

I'm pretty happy with the result. Really, apart from the revo stage 1 flash and 3" turbo back exhaust, my unlisted mods are n75h valve, APR TIP, K&N panel filter, and NGK BKR7E plugs... Aside from that i just try to keep it well maintained.

How does the A/F ratio look compared to other Mk4 GTI's you've seen?

                                7kw ??

Yeaah it shocked me, I was thinking 100 maybe, though I didn't really have anything to go off?

Im really feeling the 200k service and a fresh set up plugs and leads will free up a few more. Particularly in smoothness anyway. Curve looked pretty good!
