Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

As it was my 1st time on the track i dont think my times were all to be desired, but that didnt worry me in the least!!

Although Ed did take my car around for a squirt and i timed him in one lap where he was not giving full stick recorded a 1:15. we thought if he gave it to her that might be brought down to a 1:10. who knows!

Not bad seeing it was running street tires at normal pressure, street fuel and very factory brakes

i have a family member who races HQ's around and said his best is a 1:06. i know they are an old clunker but the thing is fully. . . and i mean fully race set up! go figure.

be so scary what a race tuned vr6 would do

    p.s. i love Germans haha!!

Ha-ha....you're being a bit harsh on the blue beast.....that was his cool down lap, Ricey

It's all about set-up around Baskerville and maintaining a smooth consistent lap....especially in a car without huge pull. My little Cyborg RS (Mirage Cup Car) went round Basky in 61.7, which for a 1600 MIVEC, was a pretty quick time Sensational little package, though!

From riding in the silver beast compared to the other cars out there, you'd have to agree that it's hard to keep it smooth and consistent with so much grunt and a road set-up I'm sure Dom's footage would show this if he can get it loaded For having a bit of fun on a private practice day, you just want a bit of a compromise.....don't want to stuff around with your road set-up too much, James

Would have been quicker than that I would have thought, FJ Steve

My old big fat and heavy MK4 GTI went round Symmons in 73/74 from memory....and they don't perform by any stretch

Mike...we are talking of the mid - late '70's (memory is not THE best)

Set up for the Datto was:
          1970
          1600cc, twin 1.75"" SU carbies
          Monroe "air" shocks (rear)
datto 1200 diff (didn't find out about that until I was selling the beast)
          Aunger 16 x 5.5JJ "Hotwire" mags
          Kleber V12 low profile rubber

I always had great tussles with comparitive lap times with Benny Parsons
(1973 HQ 4 dr 202 column shift)...Benny was Motoring writer for the Advocate at the time. Maybe I have the lap times wrong....happy to have them altered

              hey all,
yeah it was a great day, and we were very lucky with the weather down in the south.
it was a great experiance and we will definately all be keen to do some more!
going in mikes 20vt around the track was one of the most exhillerating experiances of my life!
and the girlfriend had a good time too, old ed c took her for a spin in the little orange beast
anyway, heres the pics from my camera, will have to get the video clips to ben this week so he can have a fiddle and get some stuff on youtube.

cheers to ed c for organising, mike for turning up in the silvery hellraiser, ben and james for the drive down, the good lord above for not "weeing" on us whilst on the track

              cheers lads,
              - D.

haha ^^ after we got down there, none of us were 100% sure about getting to the track, ricey said was 90% sure so me and ben followed him, and we missed the turn off at first lol.
not to worry though son, all i can say is lucky i wasnt lookin for the track by myself! haha

turned up a little earlier than ed, and decided to hang outside and watch the action

some interesting and unlikely track cars showed up!

i had the old hand pump trying to get my tyre pressure up, talk about a battle! the bloody thing had a tiny hole in it which let air out depending on what angle you used it on hahaha

haha, Ed C aka Mother Goose leading the little goslings around for the first time hehehe

not that you can see it, but mike was whizzing around that corner in the background screeching as he went!

mike and ben coming back from a couple of laps in the 20vt beast

ricey loved taking the vr6 out, and by 5pm it wasnt looking like he was going to come back to the pits! lol

me and ben setting off in his mk2 gti

what a ripper day, hopefully we get a couple more blokes turning up next time.

Not the best footage (not sure what happened at the end), but Benny managed to put together a litle vid of Dom's beige Mk1 and my silver Mk1 out at Baskerville

240 ponies under the hood sure makes for a big arm workout
