Well I drove the new CLS63 yesterday (with performance pack option - 410Kw) and indeed the new 5.5 is a great sounding engine. It doesn't have the overrun burble when engine braking like the 6.2 does, but the note is certainly beefier / more masculine and sounds like it should be a bigger displacement engine than the 6.2 rather than a smaller one.

But forget the engine note - the power of that new engine is just amazing. A couple of full throttle launches in the CLS and the C63 starts to feel slow - not that the 0-100kph times are much different (the CLS is 0.1sec faster) but the torque of the turbocharged engine is just awesome!

Both cars operate on the same principle of stuffing a big engine into a relatively small chassis, and both suffer from traction issues as a result of trying to put too much power through small tyres. Both the GTI and AMG badges garner respect from those who know, and are passed off as 'nothing-specials' by the majority who don't - great attributes for a daily driven performance car.

The Polo would eat the Merc at Wakefield though...
      And as for the Lambo........???

Around Wakefield I'm still about 3 sec quicker in the Gallardo than the Polo. The tightness of the circuit means the G's additional 200Kw over the Polo can't really be used to the same extent as at circuits like Eastern Creek or Sandown, but Wakefield is the only circuit where I've run both vehicles to make a clear comparison.

That said, people who don't spend time on the racetrack don't always realise or appreciate that there's a massive difference between a sports/super/hyper-car and a track-car. The Lambo is a very fast street car but it's not been set up or modified for track driving, so after a few laps you start feeling the limits of the street tyres, lower temperature brake pads and a cabin full of electric leather seats and multi-zone climate control.

Turn that single lap shootout at Wakefield into a 30 minute endurance race and the Polo would probably come out in front.

I can't comment on the drive but with in my dads new E63 (with performance pack) it definitely feels much faster than his (old shape) E63 that he had in Aus before he moved to the states but that's only from my passenger seat point of view having never driven either of them haha and I'd love to see some pics of the lambo

I have had quite a lot of 'other cars' that have been Mercs! Nothing like the AMG stuff earlier in this thread though - 2 x W123 Diesels, a W126 280S and a W116 450SE (that was a big noisy thirsty fast V8 so that's as close to an AMG as I'll ever get!). Currently I have three w111/w110 sedans, otherwise known as a Fintail or Finnie as they were the only MB model to ever have tailfins!

I've had this W111 230S for 3 years. 1967, Horizon blue with navy mb tex interior, auto column shift.

This 1965 W110 190c came along in February 2010. I am the 10th owner and the car has a massive history file with every receipt for the car since 1965! It's had some resto work and I'm just putting some final touches to it.

Followed by another W110, this 1967 200D did have a 4cyl 2.0L diesel engine but it has been converted to a lovely 6 cylinder MB straight 6 and I'm planning on doing it up as a hot rod.

I guess I like a da Finnies yesh?!

I have a w126 as well as a bike, 4wd, xr8, 2 vr6's (ones a spares car). As I said to my wife we build the garage and the cars will come. I do have a top wife and she's a good sort to boot. I really enjoy my 380sel it's such a lovely cruising car and turns heads with custom exhaust and 2 x 12 subs in the back. People look and must think he has grey hair the doof doof music can't be coming from that car. My wife is certain I will never grow up i will just get older.

                        Very nice cars here.
My other car is a 2005 C180 Elegance with Sports pack. Nothing special but a nice daily driver that's served me well.

My Weekend Warrior is not a Merc or a VW but an old holden

                        It's a 1983 Commodore SL/E that I'm restoring (with a modern twist)

Nothing flash but have a w210 E320 overseas as my holiday car. Hasn't missed a beat since 1996 and cant bring myself to sell it. only has 26000km on the clock as I only drive it every few years. The A class was my runabout in Germany but since sold, whilst the 320 is for the long hauls through Europe. Thought id be silly with the plates.

Hey you don't happen to have a 1JZ or 2JZ in that W202 do you? I had a facelift W202 C200. Sold it last weekend. What VW do you looking at anyway? Don't buy an Audi unless it's a RS...otherwise it's just an overpriced VW
