I came accross this TRAKKA that I think has the makings of a good cheap camper, the pop up roof is worth more than the $3,000 starting price alone. You would need to be handy though.

I thought Trakka only did full kit outs?

In the earlier days of T4 production they were fairly flexible, probably when the company was smaller. One of the conversions was adding a lift for wheelchairs, they pop up for sale from time to time. Another was the multivan. I have a sales brochure for one of those.
When I purchased my first van [in'03] they would convert S/H vans from very basic to the full works.
