Looking at it closer though it's probably earlier than '79 as it's got chrome bumpers and door handles.
There's no towing eye's in the panels either so it's never been a plastic bumper car.
Dash board speaker grill is wrong for '79 too.
1979 should have the remote adjust mirror on the drivers side.
All of the '79s I've seen have all been German built GLDs.
I'm thinking it's one of the last Aussie built ones, maybe a '77?79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car
