I think it's mainly because they're the original Mk1. And there's quite a lot of differences, actually.

I don't know why anyone would want to do that... Plus I don't really like the convertible look in general...

I think it was destroyed a long time ago (the ad says it's been in storage for 10 years), long before most of us were into VWs. It's not like a perfect example just appeared and had its roof removed with a can opener. Most Mk1s bit the dust years ago.
