which for all we know could be a complete bucket. If it was in good condition, it would be worth mentioning or worth being for sale in its own right, otherwise, I'd just assume it's semi-stripped, not running and probably a rust bucket.

                looks like a good buy,

If the other golf is in average condition and has some usefull parts it could be a goer

5k is a little steep though

These people clearly don't know the current market value and are guessing. See redbook to kill the price orbit...

I note the vendor calls the car 'brown' but the real VW colour is 'Martini Olive' ....i only know as my 'olds ordered their Kombi in this colour in '76...

I know these cars you guys are talking about are hardtops @ over $5k, but I figure a Mk1 Cabby is in a slightly different league and thus mine worth $5.8k, esp. when you consider the $$$$ I've put into it and Dubsteve got close to $7k for his last year in a more depressed economy !!

cabs are a bit of a different story mark. They seem to be holding thier value well. something about top down fun in the sun probably. For that reason they're desirable even to none VW people, whereas a car like I originally posted, has a roof, and for doors and is too overpriced to not be standard and immaculate. (given it looks in pretty good nick though!)

Times are changing rebook means nothing to cars over 20 years old, especially if people buy them and its something that is unique and hard to get in original condition (in QLD especially). I know most young guys look to the mk1 for a cheap first car, my first mk1 was far from my first car ive been down many paths and have the funds to buy a new mk6 gti but i choose not to. I have been searching for the last 4 years to find my 2nd mk1, i wanted something not hacked up and original paid a few bucks for it but its pretty much mint!

The mk1 in question, have a good look at pictures. A more realistic price would be around $2500 - $3000 driveway with RWC. roof racks spoil it, front beaver panel has some sort of rust and missing paint. Ive seen a few sets of those seats in my time and they are rubbish the foam collapses in them, 78 model has better seats. Paint looks original but not perfect.

The good points has a 1.8l with 5 speed better than a 260.000km old 1.6l, chrome bars don't look bad either. By the time you do the conversion to a $1000 mk1 you'd be up to $2500 pretty quick.

I agree with you there. It's still in very good nick and worth a bit, but not $5500! I reckon ~2.5K would be much more reasonable price.
