Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

If you're after a Kubelwagen then Classic Throttle Shop have one for sale

      1971 VW Type 181 'Kuebelwagen'

      Olive Green
      4 Door Convertible
      4 Speed Manual
      1.6 litre
      44,691 kms
      VIN-No. 1812304589
      A$ 35,995

The VW Type 181 was popularly known in the UK as the “Trekker”, in the US as the “Thing” and in Mexico as the “Safari”. It was built from 1969 until 1983, although civilian sales stopped in 1980, it was a continuation and improvement over the “Kuebelwagen” which had been used by the German Miltary in World War II.

Based on the Karmann Ghia floorpan using reduction gearing from the VW Transporter it was an accomplished vehicle off-road.

This vehicle has quite an interesting history, it was purchased about 25 years ago by 4 medical students in Germany and they readied the car for a massive overland trip to Cape Town via the Sahara desert, this must have been a magnificent experience!

Once in Cape Town the vehicle the car was sold to its current owner who had it fully restored with no expense spared, any corroded panels were replaced and all mechanicals were completely overhauled, when he moved to Sydney more than ten years ago it came with him and it was modified to make it more suitable as a road/beach car, the reduction gearing was removed and the car lowered, Bilstein shocks at the rear, a “Gene Berg” short shift gearbox installed, stainless steel performance exhaust system fitted, Porsche “Cookie Cutter” wheels and Porsche 911 seats fitted.

It’s a striking looking car in any environment and can be driven roof up and side windows in place or completely naked with front screen folded down and doors removed-perfect for summer.

The car has been little used by its current owner and is in absolutely immaculate condition, its needs nothing spending on the car as everything is new already. If you prefer all the original parts have been retained so it could be returned to standard for a more Military type vehicle.

How better to create a stir wherever you go than this?

The above is not a Kubelwagen but is a Type 181 also known and sold as the Thing and Trekker.
