    it may just be me but that does not look like an original GTI, It looks like a K jet like my Red Mk2

      early mk 2 gti's were small bumper and Kjet, and 8V.

            It looks like a South African built 8V plain jane GTI,the clear reflectors under the front bumper are a give away.
            But all SA spec GTI s had factory alloys...this car has the ugly steel wheels more garden variety Golfs had at the time.
            But the badging,and Black sticker stripes along the sides were normal for VWSA .

              Yup its a South African GTI.
              The scuttle panel where the wiper stick out has 3 dimples on German built cars as they were either right or lefthand drive. African ones were all RHD and only had two dimples. not 3.
              Its probably a good thing, early pre emissions head with massive valves and manly kjet system. Would eat an Aussie Mk2.
              Worth the money all day IMO.

                  Why does the badge say GTi<--(lower case i)? I thought they were Suzukis. Plus no GTI interior etc.

                    The South African cars were basically all trimmed to order, almost unique and I have seen those GTi badges, again a SA thing!
