I really dont want to be spending anywhere over $2500, anything over that it may aswell not be a "project car" haha thanks for the offer though im more interested in the golfs than the Vento.

Sucky thing is I cant drive a gti on my P's :/

you can get an exemption for a gti on your Ps! but the gti alone would be at least 6k+ for a half decent one. And then you may as well pick up a sweet rare vento...

I believe law has changed. Now based of power to weight not if it has a turbo or not. Pretty sure all factory golfs are ok now for provisional licence. (I believe that's the case in NSW anyway)

Yer thats true ive been meaning to read up on the exemption laws in QLD. Im sure you are restricted to what times you are allowed to be on the road between but things may have changed..
But yer i wouldnt be looking to spend near 6k on a gti, would just love a plain and simple golf vr that i can fix up over time.

Why do you say that? Just wondering.
I probably wouldnt be keen on one thats done over 200,000kms.
but if theyr anything like the bora I know the older ones will be loaded with broken window regs and door locks hahaha but thats fine.

Cheap VR6's are a bad idea because they're a f***ing nightmare to keep on the road if their servicing, especially major services, aren't up to date.

The engine itself is an overbuilt and tough piece of metal, but...

Electrical gremlins like cluster failure are the least of your worries. Timing chains, bushings, pumps and cooling systems, input shaft seals, clutch forks, they all go eventually with age and Km's and if they're not attended to vigilantly you're looking at a lot of money to keep it on the road. Like Mk1 golfs, you shouldn't approach Mk3 VR6's without knowing what you're getting yourself into and doing your research.

Do yourself a favour and buy a 1.8 CL/2.0 in decent condition (around the same amount of money) if you're looking at a project car on a budget mate. They aren't fast, but a decent set of JOM Coilovers and some nice aesthetic upgrades like wheels etc will reward you with a reliable and relatively well handling car that looks great.

My MK3 VR6, she may be a pain in the ass, but she's MY pain in the ass. Nobody else can have her.

Only for 2010 and newer man. Everything older has to be exempted. QLD just decided to make our laws even more complicated. Sick of the Bureaucratic BS that goes on up here.

Agree with Jimmy's comments above. You wont find a cheap one "not requiring much mechanical work". In fact, even low ks ones can be a pain because they're coming of age in terms of stuff like Chains, cooling systems, clutches etc. And yes, thats even if theyve been looked after.
