very hard to tell what you should spend as this will be a case by case thing....
If you want a car that you dont have to spend anything on once you get it then you may be willing to pay more for it, downside is you have to be really aware of what you are buying as you dont know what/how the works been done, upside potentially no more money to spend.
If you want a car that you need to fix up a little then you may spend less, downside is you have to fix it up, upside is you KNOW what you have done to it and how its been done.
My wife and I bought a 1974 1300 years ago with the view of doing it up... so cost was going to be minimal as i wanted to spend most of the money on the fixing not the buying. It was more important to us that the body, pan and interior were in pretty good nick (interior meaning clean/unbutchered).
Took 6 months to find the one we settled on. It was in ok condition, body looked pretty much rust free in the important places etc interior was clean, the dash (padded in the 74) didn't even have a radio in it so the pad was in good condition etc.
We paid less than $2000 for it. drove it home.
My advice is patience... there are some crap ones that you should run away from.... but there are good ones out there and at reasonable pricing.
Good luck with the search.1974 1300 Beetle, 1997 Golf GL, 2003 New Beetle Cabrio, 2014 Audi A4 quattro

Not sure how much of this old thread is still there... but this is ours.
