  • WA MK2 Golf Hard Brake Lines (front left)

    Hi there,

Rounded flare nut (even with proper flare spanners) on front left hard brake line (from engine bay to front left wheel). Please PM if you have this lying around, may take remaining lines if price is good.

Heat it up with a hot air gun, let it cool down and do it a couple more times. Then vice grip it off.

A good brake place can make them up. They're not expensive to do.

I used to make a new set in about an hour, for the whole car. Can you buy the pipe here?

Yeah, I make all my own hard lines. Any decent brake place will sell you the line and fittings.

Lucky that the weather here doesn't kill the standard hard lines like in the UK. If I got pinged at MOT time, I just did the whole car. Lasts a lifetime after that.

Copper is easy to work with and won't rust. It's mostly only used in the UK though due to steel ones rusting out so quickly.

Australian brake professionals just use steel bundy tube, same as OEM. It can come coated with nickel or copper plating or plastic. The right size for VW is 4.75mm or 3/16 . The flare nuts are M10 x 1.

Steel is harder to work with, you need a good flaring tool and it's a bit trickier to bend but it has it's advantages.

Steel is stronger which helps in high vibration applications and where you want to be disconnecting / reconnecting the lines a lot.

I haven't seen too many brake lines that are rusted through here in Aus, although the ones I have seen have all been in MK1 Golfs, usually the passenger side one in the footwell.
