  • VIC End of 5 speed mk1 gearbox

    Hi!
Ive got a 5 speed gear box that came out of a mk1 that had had a crash. The part where the gearbox mount attaches to the gear box with 4 bolts has snapped clean off the top of the gear box! Im looking for the end of this gear box, just the part that the mount bolts to, where the 5th gear is held. The gear box is either an FF, FN or an FO box. Sorry i cant say which one, its up at a mates place and i cant get up there any time soon. Will try get a picture up of it if needed but i cant remember how!
    Can anyone help?

if its an early 5 speed ( from a Mk 1 ) then it may not have the extra support bearing for the driven gearshaft that the later covers have.

You can use the later cover, however you will need to remove the needle bearing from the cover and machine, grind, chisel the inside of the cover where the needle roller is housed to avoid contact with the driven 5th gear.

I bought an end cover $35 from Vortex and machined the bearing boss of myself (being a machinist with workshop has advantages )

Good luck, PM me if you want pictures.

          Cheers,

Bolts are horizontal on a 5 speed.
              Vertical on a 4 speed.
You will need a 5 speed mount too.

Oh.....well now i feel dumb. I already have that part i think. I assumed the 5 speed attached the same way as the 4 speed, and didnt look at the rest of the mount. oooops.
Thanks for clearing that up for me, Ill be in contact if i dont have that bit!
