  • VIC WTB: Mk1/2 starter motor

Looks like the '79 starter gave up the ghost - Has anyone got a lead on a cheap new/rebuilt unit or a spare lying around?

It's for my daily so I'm looking for something early this week

    Cheers

    Use a Golf 3 one.
Easier to find, would generally have less use second hand.

Yup, that was my first plan - Apparently they're only $70 at Repco (down from $420) at the moment. Just no stock anywhere.

I ended up speaking to the guys at Connection Auto Electrics in Nth Melb, they happened to have one refurb'd previously. Got quoted $175 to repair the old one or the same for the one they had.
Installed in 20 minutes and worked a treat.

      Thanks guys.

Future note to self or anyone else in the same boat:
MK3 starters have a shorter pinion which doesn't go into the bushing like the mk1/2 starter does. also, mk3 have a 3rd mounting ear (not required, but doesn't interfere) 020s have the bushing - I'm not sure you'd want to use a mk3 starter without swapping the pinion. (?)

Oh golly gosh what have we here ?
From the top,mk2,mk3 and mk1 starter motors,
        Spot the shaft difference ?
        Oh thats right none.

Note to myself: Don't bother trying to help anyone out again.
