  • QLD Mk2 GTI engine 8v (golf)

    Hi there all,

Wanting to breathe some life back into poor old 92 gti 8v - any good s/h or reco engines out there, or I am considering rebuilding myself. Either way, where can I source rebuild kit/ what sort of prices for reco engines?

    Cheers,
    Courtney.

Consider fitting a 2 litre from a MK3. The bottom end would go under your head. If you have a Aussie delivered GTI, drop the really restrictive manifold and downpipe for the MK3 bits as well.

I believe it is an aussie delivered gti, where could I source a short block then if the head suits the 2L and what sort of prices should I expect. Manifold etc aswell. Do all the other ancillary components bolt onto this block.

My main issue is that current motor verry tappetty and the head probably needs a rebuild too.

      Any suggestions appreciated.

I'd take the sump off and have a look at the pick up on the oil pump. Very likely that it's blocked with a heap of crap. Clean that off and do an oil change and flush. It'll sound better for sure.

All the ancillaries should swap over no problems.

A new set of valve guides and tappets would make a big difference.

          Thanks for the suggestions

Ok checked the sump and not too bad, but the oil change made a big difference, still quite noisy until it is revved above 3k and then quietens a bit.

Will be pulling the engine out anyway as clutch is slipping quite badly and whilst the engines out might attempt rebuild if parts are easy to source. Already have clutch and seals etc for that job. do you know where i can get rings etc + gasket kit, bearings.... for rebuild.

          Cheers,
          Courtney.

Wouldnt the ADZ 1.8 be a better option, it revvs heaps better, 2.0 im sure from memory can cause dramas correct me if im wrong

              That's true Jimmy.

Was thinking of the capacity increase. The 2 litre dissy can be a problem, different diameter, so needs a spacer ring.

Yeah Gav its a bit curly mate hey, the head fits straight on but yeah theres a few associated dramas, along with getting the fuelling right too. I dont think its quite as bad doing the ADZ, i think there is a few of these around at the moment.
Suppose for the increased displacement you could opt for just going all out fitting a 2.0 top and bottom along with the wiring and ecu. If you were going out to the point of having all the unit out of the car it would be the time to do the loom and ecu. Go 2E and miss the immob issue, or go the immob as it isnt too much of a drama as its non cluster.
Just a thought, then a 2.0 Gti would be good.
                What u reckon??

                  Hi there Jmac,

Just pulling all the wiring off and disconnecting hoses in prep for engine removal. Will the adz bolt straight in i can get these

Overland Parts, Inc. but would prefer something a bit cheaper and local

but the local distributor might be unhappy.

Any ideas, I just want bolt in no (or very minor mods) to give new life to my g/friends beloved daily driver - she wont have another car, just the mk2. Although she occasionally likes driving the vr6 and scares me!!

                  Any help appreciated.

Hi again ill check with some contacts im sure you can get a recon PB engine from the UK, well PB was what we had iin the UK and we have the RV here, PB is actually more HP actaully forget that as it would be a different ECU. Still the PB would do the job( sorry talking out loud!!). Im a bit hesitant to say go just bottom end mate as the top will just be as tired unless you plan to redo the guides, valves springs etc?? Ill check if i get the chance next couple of days

                    Cheers

I have a low mileage 2.0 litre ADY engine with down pipe etc. that has been sitting in my garage for ages. I'm keen to clear out the space. A couple of hundred bucks would do it.
2001 Bora 4 Motion Sport now used by number two son
2011 Skoda Octavia Scout now with Underground Performance tune
2010 Jetta 125 tdi dsg for the misses - Impressed
2006 Polo GTI - Enhanced by some of Gav's magic - Absolutely loving it

                          Thanks for the offers,

Are these engines real candidates for transplant, the ADY and AGN, in previous post i was aftrer something pretty much bolt in without any (or very minor mods) but if they are what would need to be done to fit and what of mine is kept and what else would I have to source.

                          Current engine
                          RV coded with 3me head.

Thanks again for your help.. I do have a little time to undertake a change but would prefer not to, but the appeal of extra power is always too hard to ignore

                          Hi there All,

Just trying to get that darned clip off the downpipe, one is easy to get to the other well... Can I leave the downpipe on and will it negotiate it's way out of the engine bay still attached to the manifold????

It would have to be way easier to undo the 3 nuts holding the downpipe to exhaust than wrestle with the clip for half the day.

                          Any input appreciated.,
