Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Want to buy Detroit Rims

    Hi guys

I'm in the market for some Detroit rims, i love the look of them. Can't seem to find any. Was looking at tempe tyres. Was told of tirerack but can't find them. Was also told of ozaudi too.

I've got 17s now. Any benefit from 18in?

Or this one as this comes with correct tyre size of 225 40 18.

235 40 18 is a bit bigger than the OEM spec and the 7.5 width of the Detroit is actually too small for 235 tyre width.

IMO, having driven my GTI in both 17" Denvers with Potenza RE050 and 18" Detroits with Potenza RE050A, I like the 18" better.

With 17" the car felt a bit wobbly due to the taller tyre wall and hence more flex. The 18" feels sharper.

There is NOTHING wrong with having 10mm of extra tyre gripping the road on each corner....

235 40 18 tyre technically requires 8" minimum wheel width.

          RIM WIDTH
Correct rim width ensures flex at the designed flex point in a tire sidewall for optimum tire performance.

If the rim is too narrow, the flex point moves toward the shoulder area, creating heat buildup in the shoulder, which reduces tire life and could result in failure.

also, on 235 40 18 the speedo would show that you're travelling slower than actual, by a very tiny bit :p

besides that, off course wider tyres will give more grip, (but on correct wheel width, else there's a bit of extra flex on the wall) it's good for cornering

and again, in normal daily street driving the above issues are very minimal, and in fact 235 40 will give softer ride compared to 225 40.

            HEHEHEH you serious

I wouldn’t read or believe the jargon on the net/websites unless you put that theory into practise, like I have...

I managed to get a NEW PB at Wakefield Park running 235/40/18 tyres on 7.5inch wheels....
I don’t see the extra 10mm compromising the tyre flex, performance, heat etc
From personal experience I believe it’s better....
BUT that’s my opinion... Each to their own i guess
