Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Parts to upgrade mk2 to mk3 brakes

    Hey all,

Looking to replace the discs/pads/lines/fluid on the mk2, and it's been suggested upgrading the 'hubs' (?) so that I can use mk3 GL (?) discs/pads.

    I'll be buying the mk3 pads/discs new.

So what exactly do I need to run mk3 parts?

    Many thanks,

    Tim

You'll need mk 3 GL hubs, and calipers, (rotors and pads too)

I can't recall which brake lines I used, but if you have both to choose from, it should all bolt straight up.

Ok cool so I'm chasing the hubs and calipers, anyone have these for sale? Fronts only I think the rears are the same..

I'll get the mk3 discs/pads/lines from ecs or somewhere...

Tim, I'll have to dig through my old parts. I upgraded my GL stuff for VR6 stuff so I should have them lying around somewhere.

As for the hub, do you only need the hub, and not the whole steering knuckle? I'd suggest getting a new one, as you could have problems with premature failing wheel bearings if you install old ones.
        Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
        Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Ok cool let me know how you go. I'm not sure about the steering knuckle, or what it is exactly lol..

Thats the ugly thing which attaches to the control arm, strut, driveshaft, tie rod and ball joint. Its also where the caliper bolts onto.

If you had wanted this stuff earlier (like a few months) i had thrown out my mk3 front brake stuff after upgrading to big brakes!

Ps: if u wanted to go 280mm brakes and 4x100 all you would need is the same as above but vr6 calipers and carriers and g60/cupra rotors (which are cheap from gap)

The first upgrade i ever did was to 256mm Golf MK3 hubs. They're seriously like a unbolt bolt in swap... easy as pie, cheap to service and actually makes a different.
