  • VIC kjet 1.8

    hi guys,

im thinking of getting a replacement engine for my mkII,
its got a 1.8 kjet engine number begins with GX. My one is starting to get pretty tired quickly, just done over 240xxxkms, the 4 speed manual box is awsome still, but the engine is starting to give some slight headaches. So was just enquiring if anyone has a kjet replacement with under 150xxxkms or around that, and a price. just weighing up options atm.

    cheers,
    kosta.

if the head is still good, you could pop a 2l bottom end under it, give it more capacity, and should increase compression too. PM Golf Loon, he's probably you best bet for a new engine.

I'm thinking about the same route, but read this first MK2 Golf GTI - Engine Conversion
If it is digifant it'll be straight forward, k-jet is a bit tricky.

btw, why your Mk2 come with 4 speed ???

Yeah thats why id rather stick to kjet, much easier just to chuck in another kjet, but as jarred said a 2l bottom end wouldnt be a bad idea also, the head seams to be fine, i am getting fairly decent lifter noise though, as for the 4speed box, it alredy came in the car, im almost 100% sure that it used to be a 1.6l, and the 4speed is a deisel box, so its pretty strong which is good, although you do get the lag in 4th gear

lifters are pretty easy to replace. It might be worth it to get a VRS kit and new lifters and get the head pressure tested and hot tanked, clean it all up and slap some new valve stem seals and clean the valves up. that'll cost about 3-400 bucks and then chuck a good low milage 1.8 or 2L block underneath it.

btw, just a bit OT. how does the mk 2 ride with the hottunings? compared to dado's mk 1 maybe?

hey jarrod, there awsome man, mine are JOM brand, so much more stable the car feels, i dont have sway or strut bars, but handling is a lot better also, as in comfortability, the first couple of weeks on a daily is a bit rough, but know they've settled in nicely, only problem ive got, is being to low up front so me and dado have to cut the front guards, very common on mk2s. I bought mine for cheap as F***. if you want details drop me a pm, or give me a buzz.

Be worth taking the sump off and cleaning out the oil pickup. That might sort your lifter noise and fix your engine.
If you want a 2L bottom end, I have some crazy bargains at the moment. Call if you want the hook up.

basically all the stuff you need when doing a headgasket/head reco.

has head gasket, rocker gasket, stem seals, intake/exhaust mani gaskets. (I may have missed one thing)

This thread should be moved to Mk2 Section

Has anyone digested/understood the link that I posted, specific for K-jet. I can see 2 problems (quoted).
I know quite a few people has done 2.0 bottom end conversion for digifant Mk2. Has any one done one for K-jet ?

For the K-Jet, you have no choice but to use the original distributor with the TSR adaptor ring and the cog off the distributor that (hopefully) came with the 2.0L block. The K-Jet dizzy uses mechanical advance in the distributor body, whereas the advance in digifant and later injection is controlled by the ECU.
With the K-Jet you have to find somewhere to put the control pressure/warm up regulator. On the original block, this is bolted onto the aluminium plate next to the oil filter pedestal where the mechanical fuel pump is mounted on the carb models. Since you have to buy the distributor adaptor from TSR for a 2.0L into K-Jet, I would suggest buying the breather adaptors / cover plates from them as well and removing the black plastic breather box on the front of the 2.0L block. Remove the CPR mounting plate from the original block (2 Allen bolts) and get someone with a TIG or equivalent to weld it onto the front of the TSR breather cover (also ally) before fitting that to the new 2.0l block. Make sure that it all fits with respect to the CPR pedestal and hoses (especially if you are using an Audi 100 CPR with vac enrichment) before welding it up! This puts the CPR back where it was on the 1.8 block.

I wouldn't be able to commment without seeing the actual things mentioned. But IIRC making an adapter ring shouldn't be too hard (Pete jones made one for his white car which has a 1.8w 2.0 bottom on carbs) and he also made up a blanking plate for the other spot. I'm sure you could mount the Kjet stuff on that block off plate.

You can either buther a 2L dissy and put the guts of the kjet one into the bigger case.
                              Or buy the adaptor ring.

The block off plate with the holes for the warm up reg is the easy option, but depending on your alternator setup, you can leave the oil brether hose and simply move the warm up reg over on the block.

I guess you have 2 options, buy or make bits and get dirty yourself. Or take it to a competent mechanic with kjet knowledge.
