Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • SA Decent Sounding Horn

Horn suitable for 2002 Mk4 Golf to stop it sounding like a Daihatsu (!)

Not sure if this requires a different horn or my standard one is stuffed, but my Golf has always sounded like the Roadrunner.

I'd like a horn that at least has a good "parp" to it - ie. like two notes combining to a deep musical note.

    Cheers.

Grover 24" air horns can be purchased from truck shops for about $100.This is about a deep a note as you can get before getting into the really big fog horn stuff off ocean liners.

You'll need an on board air supply capable of at least 60psi. I use a storage tank to supply this one.

These horns are made by Klein and are much, much louder but higher pitched.

I am realistic, those are both my street registered Mk1s

The Bora's in line for a stored pressure dual horn rig very soon.

Perhaps a compact air horn with integrated compressor like this might suit the less courageous http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Stebel-Nautil...item518fc2db21

Thanks for the replies so far ... Golf Houso any chance of hearing the sound of those horns(?) - particularly the smaller of the two as it looks like it would mount pretty much where the existing horn is ...

And Peter, thanks for the info on the Grover and the Klein, but I think they're going a little overboard for what I need ... It's more about tone than volume - currently the horn sounds like the RoadRunner - it has no real depth to the sound and no musicality to the tone. (Note: I'm not after a musical horn as such, just something that makes a decent sound.)

The Stebel is getting there, but it's a bit high pitched for my taste ...

I guess I've always been disappointed at the anaemic sound of the horn on my Golf - particularly having driven other European brands which have had a true depth and musical resonance to the note they produce.

Do all Mk4s have a crap horn sound or is just the lower spec models?

            Cheers.

Edit: Thanks for putting me on the right track though, just saw this one on eBay which has a lower more musical tone:
