  • SA ISV (idle stabilization valve) for a 16V Golf MK2

    Hi guys,

Does anyone have an ISV (idle stabilization valve) for a 16V Golf MK2? Is there a suitable substitute from another Golf or Audi model? New ones are very pricy and no one is wrecking MK2 in Adelaide any more. Any advice will be appreciated.

What's up with your car mate. Have you proved the ISV is shot, whats the car doing?

      Hi Gav,

When I start the car it elevates the revs to about 2k. When the car warms up it does not drop the revs. If I disconnect the connecting plug it will drop the revs down to 950. It also does not buzz or vibrate when the ignition is on contact. A while back it use to elevate and drop revs in a wave like manner.
      Cheers.

Best to take it off the car and fill it with carb cleaner. Block the ends and shake it up.

Do that a couple of times, until the carb cleaner comes out pretty much as it went in.

Do you know how to set the tickover?

Get the engine up to temp and then disconnect the red/black wire by the coil. This disables the ISV while you set the timing and tickover. Assume the timing is good and set the tickover.

Once you have set it, re-connect it.

I like to remove the tickover screw completely and clean it up before setting the tickover. 20 years of oil residue gets in the bypass port and sticks to the screw. I usually stick it in a battery drill and polish the end with Brasso or something similar. Make sure the O ring is intact.

Something else to check, is the closed throttle switch on the throttle body. If the cable is too tight, that can cause you problems.

Is this in the MK1 in your avatar? PM if you want my number or a look at the MK2 Haynes manual.
