            • Fitted mine on Saturday. It's probably a 30 minute job at worst, including turning on the garage sound system, giving the engine cover a wash, removing the gasket around the oil filler & cleaning that; checking the oil & filling the washer bottle; checking the coolant & the battery & having a beer.

Drove the usual 45km to work this morning. Remembering the power of placebo....
My coils were 125,000km old. I don't believe they deteriorate but either work or don't. Spark plugs are 35,000km old.

Car idled better right from the start - didn't seem to have the usual 30 sec period of slightly rough running.

When at NOT, the engine pulled cleaner from low revs (like idle). I found I could get into the next higher gear 5kmh earlier, eg: 3rd at 25kmh instead of 30.

Fuel economy for the trip (Blakehurst to SouthCampbelltown) as I drove into the carpark was 5.6L/100km. This would rate as normal fuel economy for a really good, smooth run into work, except it wasn't (took an hour instead of 45mins). Generally i get 5.8-6.2l/100km.

              It's probbaly all placebo - I'll know if there's been a genuine change after I've done 5000km.

I think it's a worthwhile "upgrade" for $140 a set (compared to VW wanting $180 each) - especially on an older vehicle like mine and now I have 4 spare coils in case one of these dies.

              • Good to hear another set of coils has found a good home.

Final order is on it's way and should arrive either late this week or early next.

Still a couple of sets left if anyone wants to put one under the Xmas tree.

                  • Just wondering about these R8 coils. A lot of people seem to be using these but VW told me they are the wrong part number for my car. My question is does the part number matter or are they just coils that fit all mk6 GTI's and other models?

                    Cheers.

                    • All the dealer is saying is it doesn't come up with an R8 coil when they put your VIN into their system. It does fit and certainly works in a mk6 GTI. They're a stronger coil than stock so if you're running a tune you're less likely to have a coil fail plus they are red and look nicer than the stock ones

I have a couple of sets left so if you want one let me know and I'll send you through payment details.

They are the wrong partno because they are the coil off an Audi R8. They will still fit a Mk6 GTI though (and many other VW models). It's like an S3 intercooler will fit your car as well. Or almost any 5x112 VW/Audi/Skoda wheel.

Did you know the exhaust system on a Jetta is pretty much interchangeable with a Skoda Octavia?

Or that the brake parts can be mixed & matched in various ways to upgrade/downgrade the brakes.

Various suspension components are swappable among the different models.

I run springs designed for a diesel wagon on my petrol sedan (fantastic turn-in).

200km on mine now. Consistently getting <6L/100km on the commute. 5.6L/100km as I pulled in the driveway today including using the A/C for about 30% of the trip. It's about a 5% improvement. I assume the old ones might have been breaking down under load & missing the occasional explosion.

being red, that equates to about 2kW each. that's an increase of 8kW with all 4 coil packs installed!!
