This is not true I got the rns-510 from ebay on my 07 r32 and I did not need a new canbus. No battery drain.

zoneR32 is correct, if the RNS runs an earlier SW version it is compatible with earlier cars. You can always load earlier firmware on any RNS510
and I can confirm this I ran the earlier firmware in my '06 passat until my new gateway arrived 2 months later
