Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • SA FS Adelaide 1980 Mk1 GLS Petrol Auto 5 Door $550 - Complete and running but rusty

Hello all, for sale is this 1980 Mk1 GLS 1.6 Petrol Auto 5 door. I bought this car purely for parts / wrecking but wanted to put it up here first to see if anyone wants to take it as a whole car.

The car is complete but rusty - it has been sitting outside for many years - as a result there is serious rust in the roof and water has gotten inside the car as you can see from the pics.

    The good:
    - Has a nice set of 14" mags with wide tyres (one is flat though but it’s in the boot)
    - Has a sunroof
    - Motor runs (not smokey) and trans engages all forward gears and reverse - apparently it has a Porsche starter motor (which I assume is a good thing?!)
    - Has a factory a/c centre console (although compressor is gone)

    The bad:
    - Has been sitting for many years
    - Water damaged interior
    - Rust in boot floor, doors
    - I can't get the back doors to open, dammit Patrice!

    The ugly:
    This rust in the roof:

This panel damage to the passenger side rear:

It is what it is and I've not patched or tried to hide anything. Personally I think it's too far gone to be a road car again (even though it would be walk in rego and is not defected or written off) - but it would be an excellent candidate for a track / race car project - alternatively a great parts car - there's easily 3-4 times the asking price in parts value alone. If I can’t get my asking price for the whole car I’ll end up dismantling it myself.

Car is located in Clapham SA 5062. PM me for details or to arrange an inspection.

I’ve listed the car on ebay with a no reserve start price of $550, if anyone on here wants the car I’m happy to end the auction early and sell to a VWW member for $450.

Bump! Willing to sell for $450 to a VWW member (and also to avoid the $60 ebay final value fee!!!).

Failing that I will start dismantling it soon.

If you're on Facebook, join the EuroSA group and advertise on there. There's quite a few Mk1 fans who would likely be very keen to take it off your hands!

Thanks for the tip Adam - will do. While the car does need a lot of work, it could be saved and I don't want to anger the VW gods by pulling apart a complete Mk1 if I don't have to!

Now parting this out. I'm actually having a car club workshop day at my place tomorrow (Saturday 14th) from 11am-3pm, so any VWW members would be welcome to come along and have a look over the car in person and remove any parts you want. At this stage all parts are available.

PM me for the details, I'm in Clapham SA. Also happy to post bits anywhere at buyers expense.

          Cheers, Dave
