Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW EOI: MK1 78- 2 Door KR 16V (Twin Dellorto's)

    Hi Guys,

This is now back up for sale - no longer an EOI as I need to sell.

This has been my pride and joy for the last 3 years. It was rebuilt from the ground up and is now running a KR 16V with twin 40mm dellortos.

    Build thread here; http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ead-46488.html.

    Suspension/Steering/Braking
    - Wietec GT coilovers
    - MK1 GTI sway bars (front and rear)
    - Front lower and upper strut brace
    - Rear upper strut brace
    - Brand new poly bushes throughout the front end (i.e. control arms, front engine mount, steering rack.
    - Brand new steering rack and boot
    - Adjustable strut top mounts with one-off hand made spherical trust bearings from KMAC.

    - MK1 GTI front brake upgrade. with brand new vented 239mm discs, pads and lines (new brake fluid as well)
    - MK3 rear drum upgrade with brand new hand brake cables (i.e. no slop in hand brake either)
    - OEM brake bias proportioning valves/cylinders - the car stops fantastic, with great pedal feel.

    - New CV boots
    - Brand new tie rods and tie rod ends
    - Unix performance ball joint extenders will be supplied but are not fitted currently
    - Wheel alignment recently done based on an old Alfa settings, slightly more aggressive setup with 1.7 degrees neg camber and tow out.

    Interior
    - New roof lining
    - New carpet
    - Immaculate back vinyl seat
    - Front recaro bucket seats (no rips, tears)
    - Un-cracked dashboard with all electrics working
    - Deep dish Otomoto steering wheel
    - New sound deadening on floor and inside fire wall.
    - CAMs approved fire extinguisher
    - Fixed quarter windows (i.e. not the crappy/broken push out type)

    Engine & Gearbox
    - Repainted engine bay (approx 6 months ago)
    - ARP stud bolts.
    - Brand new Holden Barina radiator with genuine Bosch fan. This is one of my favourite pieces of the conversion, radiator sits flush under the front panel and fan runs off a separate high current relay (so you're not relying on the dodgy MK1 fuse boxes. Brand new overflow bottle and coolant. All hoses/clamps are brand new (i.e. no coolant leaks).
    - New rear main engine seal
    - Brand new Carter 4070 fuel pump - you definitely won't have any fueling issues at high revs with this fuel pump. New fuel filters as well.
    - In-line low pressure fuel regulator (setting from 1.5 - 5 PSI)
    - Standard 5-speed gearbox with brand new bushing kit throughout the linkage system. Gear selection is nice and accurate.

    Exterior/Body
    - I bought this shell because it was solid. The floor panels were immaculate (no rust) and the body in general was very straight but the car does needs a paint as it has surface rust (albeit it superficial) throughout. This was meant to be the last step in the rebuild (sort of the icing on the cake you could say). For me the paint is not a great concern as the car handles, goes and sounds great, but for others I know this is a priority.
    - Standard MK3 Golf steel wheels and 2 piece TSW wheels will be supplied (recently refurbished, 14x7)
    - 50% tread on all tyres.

    Things to note
    - So this part really hurts. I was running a 1.8 16V KR with twin 40mm dellorto's which went extremely well. The engine recently dropped a valve and significantly damaged the head and piston. The block will be OK to use but the head will need replacing and you will need new pistons.

Whatever motor you choose to put in, you will have a very good handling car.

Asking $6K (without the carbs and manifold) w/4 months rego. As with all builds, this will be a very, very significant loss on my end. With the recent upgrades (as per build thread) I would like to have asked closer to $9K for it. I know I can recoup more if I was to part the car out given the parts list but I don't have the heart to rip apart the last 3 years of work.

I'm travelling overseas in later in the year and then again in 2015, so with this in mind it's not feasible hanging onto the car since I won't be in Sydney much hence why I am selling.

Happy to work out a deal/package with the right buyer. My number is 0415 054 066.

    Cheers,
    Michael

thanks mate! yeah the 16V is running well. i'm taking it to the carby shop next week to get a proper balance and simple tune (i.e. mixtures) but it runs great and is a lot of fun.
