Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC 16V Mk1 GTI replica for sale

Many forum regulars will be familiar with this car. I bought it a couple of months ago from a girl in NSW sight unseen and it's turned out to be more work than I'd bargained for.

Good stuff: It's a 76 model with GTI everything; Mk2 16V motor, 5spd GTI box, GTI interior, brakes, trim etc. Awesome Gotti 15" wheels, KW coilovers, raspy uprated exhaust. Motor is strong and starts 1st time every time, tyres are near new. Comes with a custom roof rack.

Not so good stuff: The body needs some work. It is straight and the floors and firewall are good, but the pillars have been bogged at some point, roof needs respray, there is some rust in the passenger side sill and a few small bubbles in the tailgate and a few other places. The front passenger side has had some not so great welding done very recently around the strut tower. Wheels on passenger side are kerbed on the outer lips.

Car is still NSW registered until August and new owner will need to sort roadworthy and re-reg.

Hoping for a quick sale. $3800

The so called bad points sounds like just about every mk1 Golf around these days. After all, they have all been used as daily drives and not kept in cotton wool. The good points outweigh the bad.

I didn't pay $8000 for it, but yeah I'm selling it at a considerable loss because I'm not looking to swindle anyone.

Australian built Golfs suffered from poor welding around the strut towers, many were rewelded under warranty or once the warranty expired you paid.Very common back in the 70s,hit a pothole and your strut went through the bonnet.
This is a good buy especially for a do it yourselfer.
Unless your Golf has been garaged all its life they all need a little rust repair, part of the fun owning one.
