I'm selling my beloved car due to size constraints. I now find I need to pack more bikes, more boards, more stuff every weekend, and the magic golf is now becoming just a little too cramped. The car is in Erskineville, Sydney.
Amazingly fun car to drive, but I guess you know that if you are looking at this post. Tight cornering, great acceleration since the subtle (non-insurance busting) mods that have bought this car back to how the guys in Wolfsberg would have had it, both in feel and a true GTi sound.
I've owned this car for four years and nothing major has gone wrong with it. Never used for commuting, only reasonable distance weekend trips, so its always had a good run whenever its been started. Always used 95 ron or above too, which this car seems to love.
Before I go on, first some pictures...

It's a pretty damn tidy car for its 22nd birthday, even if I do say so myself.
Wheels:
It has the alloys you can see in the photos (these came with the car when I bought it, and never got around to finding some "P"s.) Near new tyres, see below.
Music
It has a Sony CD Tuner plus aux in on the front for your ipod, uprated clarion front speakers, 6in 2-way Sonys in the rear shelf (again there when I bought it), plus a mini 5 inch active sub, hidden in the passenger foot well. Its a nice "clear" system for when you're inside the car (not to wake the neighbours!)
OK, the nitty gritty...
Maintenance
Its on 177000kms exactly at present.
Between 167k and 172k kms, the following services were completed:
-Replaced Timing Belt;
-Oil Filter and Flush;
-fuel filter replaced;
-rocker cover gasket replaced;
-timing reset;
-New Power Assisted Steering Pump;
-all auxiliary belts replaced;
-brake fluid flush and bleed;
-gearbox oil flush;
-cam shaft removal, check and retighten;
-upgraded exhaust downpipe and manifold from tiny little restrictive "drinking straw" to a nice open Mk3 downpipe... hear and feel the difference!!!
Over the four years I've had the odd bit of spot maintenance to do to, typically replacing the part, only those that you'd expect of a car this age:
-a few of the coolant sensors;
-Passenger window regulator;
-Gear linkage bushes (it now has stainless linkages and a weighted short throw shift-rod);
-New front tyres (Oct 2011), still at 95%, rear tyres at 75%.
-Reverse switch;
-globes;
-expansion tank;
-clear front indicator lenses;
-rear parcel shelf strap;
-replaced air filter with K&N;
-opened up air box for better flow (removed snorkel);
-cleaned MAF;
-breather grommet replaced;
-brake pads replaced;
-new floor mats;
-magnetic drain plug fitted to hold onto the bigger bits of, er, metal;
-gear stick boot replaced;
-drivers seat patched (no foam exposed and a pretty neat job);
Spare Parts I've accumulated over the years:
-Haynes Manual (the bible!)
-3x spare oil filters and drain plug washers;
-+6hp ECU Chip (solder in replacement if you feel the need for more power. I actually bought this around the same time as the exhaust downpipe mod, ad realised I just didnt need it.)
-Linseed Oil, the only answer to keeping the bumpers and trim black in the Aussie sun.
-Shift Rod Bearing (uprated PTFE version.)
-rocker cover gasket and cam seal;
-original "golf ball" gear knob;
-good spare pirelli in boot well;
TLC Required, if you are keen;
OK, so I dont want to waste your time, or mine, so here is all I know that could do with some TLC:
-driver side bonnet panel clear coat is peeling, but still polishes up ok;
-general pain nicks and nips, impossible to see unless you are up close;
-single shallow dent in bonnet (same panel as peeling clear coat but you can barely see it and it was there when I bought it);
-two small dents in boot (see photos), again, annoyingly there when I bought it;
-cracked dash, due to the Aussie sun. 4 cracks. I just dont notice them anymore and hasn't affected the structure;
-oh, and probably the most annoying of all, the bloody coolant light! I;ve tried everything, replacing the coolant, replacing the reservoir, etc. But it still comes on and flashes when its up to temperature. The temp never goes past half way, yet it still flashes. Its done this for the whole time I've had it, so definitely only a sensor issue, nothing systemic.
The car had some dealer based service sporadically over its lifetime and it has flown through the last few years of roadworthy checks. I had to replace the rear belts and wiper blades two years ago, but that has been it.
I've dropped by Golf Loon'd before to pick up the replacement power steering pump and he commented it had the better of the gear boxes, and it certainly has some torque.

PM ME, no tyre kickers!
For those that like to get out to the beach, its even got a parking pass for some rock-star parking around Bondi (Area 10!) valid until November too.
