SOLD!!!!!!!!!! SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am regretfully selling my silver 1976 Mk1 VW Scirocco as I have neither the space nor time to finish the (mostly completed) project.
I have owned and driven it for more than 20 years after falling in love with the classic Giugiaro-designed and Karmann-built body when I first saw it in Europe in the late Seventies and which I think still looks modern today.
It is also quick, thanks to its light 900kg weight and quite powerful, throttle-responsive 2 litre motor. Furthermore, its low CG, Bilstein suspension and Quaife differential provide good cornering.
The car is fully functional and drivable but unregistered. It is undamaged and RUST FREE!!!! (There is some surface-rust on the primed areas.) Some panels are repainted in 2-pack Diamond Silver, some in primer/undercoat and some are the original finish. All it needs is a respray and new carpets.
The car has always been garaged. It has been registered in NSW and I have the paperwork. The previous owner told me that this car was one of six Sciroccos brought to Australia in 1976 to trial with a view to marketing them here: so it has some historical significance. It would also qualify for vintage registration plates through a car club.
The list of mods and upgrades is extensive. It has basically been converted from a Scirocco TS (1.6 litre carburetted, 4-spd box) to better than Scirocco GTI spec.(2 litre fuel-injected 5-spd) using factory parts and in the factory way - even down to the colour-coding of the wiring.
Its other main features are as follows:
VAG 2.0 litre, longmotor imported new from USA. Only done about 30,000km. Always run with synthetic motor oil. Hydraulic valve lifters and match-ported cylinder head and manifolds. Large throttle-body match-ported to inlet plenum. Oil-filled sponge air filter element.
Air-oil cooler (ex VW Type 4) plus water-oil cooler (ex watercooled Kombi).
Large Radiator (Golf 2 size)
2-into-1 exhaust downpipe (ex Golf GTI) and Powersound (German) resonator and muffler.
Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection using all original parts. Golf Diesel/GTI fuel tank (means no fuel starvation).
Knock-sensor, electronic ignition, electronic-advance distributor and ignition control unit.
Golf GTI 5-speed close-ratio gearbox with Quaife differential fitted. Large 210mm clutch.
GTI antiroll bars front and rear
Bilstein gas shocks and springs (original kit made for GTI/Scirocco) all round.
GTI Front disc brakes, matching brake proportioning valves. Rear disc brakes, ATE 20.6 (?)mm brake master cylinder, silicone brake-fluid, larger vacuum diaphragm (ex Golf Cabrio).
BBS 14” alloy wheels (see photos) with factory offset (preserves negative-scrub radius geometry). Rolled wheel arches.
Nolathane (polyurethane) front and side engine mounts.
Quartz halogen low/high beams and driving lights protected by circuit-breakers.
Scheel sports seats in black-ribbed Perlon material, with rear seat in matching trim. (Driver’s seat side-bolster is frayed but I have spare Perlon material.)
VDO back bezel instruments: voltmeter, oil temperature (150deg.C), oil pressure and clock.
As-new dash (no cracks!) with professionally-made cover.
Yellow Light car alarm
Electric power windows (SPAL brand)
Rear wiper/washer kit ready to fit into already modified rear hatch.
I have given the Scirocco the “Cal Look” i.e. replacing chrome with near matt-black on bumpers, door handles, external trim etc. and using plain rubber window seals. There only remains for the driver’s-side quarter-window to be converted and I have necessary parts to complete the job. I also have all other necessary parts such as trim strips and clips.
Spare parts include brand-new, primed bonnet and rear valance, original 13” ATS alloys, cad. plated gearbox mount, three assorted K-Jet control-pressure regulators, taillight, front indicator light and many others.
