  • $15-16K for a Mk5 Golf?

Hi there. I'm looking to get a Mk5 Golf around the $15-16K mark. Ideally I want a 2.0L but the only 2.0Ls I can find in my price range tend to have over 120,000km. Should I be weary of them? Or as long as they have a detailed service history they're good to go?

Is it better to go with a 2.0L with heaps of kms or a 1.6L with far fewer?

  • #2
The 1.6 uses a prehistoric engine which is 75kw 148nm and is slllllllllow. The 2.0FSI on the other hand is 110kw 200nm and is 6spd manual over the 5spd, which means that the 2.0 will be working a lot less harder then the 1.6 in almost every situation. If the car has full service history then ignore the kms, 120k is nothing to worry about.

For that money can you not get a 2.0tdi? or even a Mkv Gti? ive seen a few gti's advertised for 19k im sure you could nego down to 17k if they're really keen to sell.

Huh? When I looked they were a lot more than that (GTI and TDI).

At that price, you won't get much, if anything, under 100k's. I am not syaing they are not out there, but good luck finding them. My old man (and me on his behalf) were looking for about 3 months for a 2.0TDi, he ended up going with an Octavia. Even the 2.0FSi (non-turbo) were selling for low 20's with under 60k on them. The diesels ARE holding their value well, in some cases better than GTi's, and people are paying the prices people are "dreaming" up.

I have been watching the market for about 2 months now and there were some bargains out there, but the majority of descent 2.0L tdi's start at the 19k mark. carsales/ebay/carsguide/tradingpost have been flooded with the same cars for months. They aren't selling. but the ones priced to sell. sell quick.

look on carsales.com for all Skodas under $20k. There's a reasonable 2007 Octavia 2.0FSI in Elegance trim level with <40,000km for $18k. It's a dealer so there will be room to negotiate. 6 speed auto OK or are you after a manual? Elegance spec is => Golf Pacific (too many features to list.

/looks in carsales.com.... 101 MkV Golfs with <80,000km & <$20k.... must be something worthwhile there?

There are plenty of cheap 2.0 tdi's if your not bothered by high klms - 150K +

If you can find someone who is desperate to sell a lower klm car that you can get into your price range, you cant go wrong with the 2.0 tdi.
We considered selling ours, but decided to keep it as a spare/second car as they are such a good car. I prefer it to our newer MK6 actually.
I think the diesels are holding their value well - we were offered 17K as a trade in for MY07 comfortline 2.0 tdi with 85K on the clock. It wasnt a smoke and mirrors deal as we got 17% discount on the RRP of the new one with or without the trade in.

I sold my 2006 GTI for 20k at Christmas it had 120k's on it and still drove like new....I dont think the K's affect the car (provided its been looked after properly) but it will certainly make it harder to sell again. Good Luck
