Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • SA FS 1979 Golf GLD Project $500 Northern Adelaide

Hi all, it is with a heavy heart that I am offering my GLD for sale, I had originally planned to do this car up and use it as a runabout/commuter/daily, but since buying it...
    - I've bought another two project cars
    - The car has developed an overheating issue
    - I've started catching the train to work everyday, so even if I fixed it up it would no longer be required anyway

    PICS:

    THE BAD:
    - Car was running very well until it developed an overheating problem (suspect water pump, blockage in the water jacket or head gasket - without looking into it to far, I'd say the head will probably have to come off).
    - Car needs a respray, has surface rust all over from living near the coast with the P.O. (paint seems to be 'blistering' on top??) but is structurally sound. I will include a new passenger front guard with the sale as the one on there has a rust hole in the bottom. Or you could do like I've done and just keep up with the cut and polish and leave it as is!
    - Battery will not hold charge anymore (from sitting too long), but starts and runs after a jump-start.
    - Rego has run out (march 2011), walk in rego in SA.

    THE GOOD:
    - Apart from the battery and overheating problem, the car drives extremely well and is mechanically sound, I've spent over $600 in the last 6 months on servicing and replacing wheel bearings & balljoints (have receipts) so that the car drives properly, is safe and reliable and the servicing is up to date. All electrics work, Kenwood CD player with front speakers fitted. Rear brakes are discs from a Mk2 and I've rebuilt the vacuum pump too. Excellent tyres all round. Fix the overheating problem, fit a new battery, re-register it and it's ready for the road.
    - Interior is very good, headlining, carpets and seats great (some rips in drivers seat tho) - worst part is the cracked dash, but my custom made 'cow pattern' dash cover will be included with the sale!!!!
    - Has original books, plus I'm including a haynes workshop manual, spare rust-free front guard, spare tail light and some other bits with the sale (easily over $100 worth!). The car is complete, replacement parts for any bits there that are missing or broken are included.

You can come and take it for a quick drive around the block if you want, and the car can be jump started and driven onto a trailer or tow truck (but after 2 mins of driving it starts to overheat - so you will NOT be able to drive it home).

You can read about everything I've done (and planned to do) sofar in this thread:

With a little bit of mechanical attention and a re-spray this could be a very tidy, reliable and economical daily. Yes it could be dismantled for parts, but I hope that whoever buys it will keep it on the road.

It's going up on ebay later this week with a start price of $500 no reserve, if any VWW members want it the price is $500 firm. Please PM me. Car is in Parafield Gardens.

      - Rego has run out (march 2011), walk in rego in SA.
The overheating developed as I was driving it home just after having the front wheel bearings and balljoints replaced - All the coolant had leaked out through the overflow bottle and under the bonnet it was steaming like a train. The next day I re-filled it and tried again, but after a few minutes of driving it did it again - got back home and same result - no coolant and lots of steam. I haven't had it looked at professionally (not had time due to new project cars) so that will be something for the new owner to do. But without really knowing I would play it safe and say that the head will need to be removed and it will need a new head gasket at the very least.
