  • Want to buy Mk1 Diesel

    Hi All,

Been awhile since I've been on here. So just a quickie (so to speak) anyone know how much one would expect to pay for a Mk1 Diesel, how easy one would be to obtain? Any and all comments/info would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Garry Crick VW on the Sunshine Coast has one in their showroom with (from memory - don't quote me!) only 60K clicks and totally original!

Apparently they're willing to take offers on it and I don't think they'd be after much... it was a trade on a new diesel Golf, had only the one owner since new and it's in great original condition.

Here's the link to the ad for my GLD (bought last month but the ad is still up on the web)

1980, VOLKSWAGEN GOLF, Adelaide, Private Used, $650 at carsguide.com.au

I paid $600 and for this I have a running, drivable, rego'd GLD that came with a boot full of spares (I reckon the spares would almost be worth the $600 alone). Mechanically it needs a new diaprhagm in the vacuum pump, probably a new battery and maybe a wheel bearing. Body wise it is very rusty but structurally good. With general tidy up repairs and body work it will come up nicely without having to overcapitalise too much

At the other end of the spectrum is the nice Red golf GTD that is on carsales (advertised on here too) for $5000.

I reckon mine was a bit of a bargain, I've seen others on ebay in the past for $1500 - $2000 for running and rego'd examples. I don't believe you will find many complete running cars under $1000.

Has anyone else also noticed that Diesel Mk1's seem to jump about $1000 in value when petrol prices go up?

Here we go with Air bags again in a mk1 topic, its a diesel you won't have enough speed to hurt yourself

Back to the topic at hand, GLDs in original condition are getting harder to find most people pull the diesel out and though in a petrol because the diesel is to hard. So its a matter of being patient and keep an eye out took 2 years for me to find my GLD i got a few months back, and i don't regret waiting for 1 minute its a awesome machine.
