I bought this car three years ago as a temporary driver while restoring my Studebaker. But its such a good original car that I haven't been able to part with it. However I'm heading overseas shortly, so I am putting it up for sale.
Its a 1985 factory convertible (by Karmann), which was delivered new to the UK and imported to Canberra in 1987. Its been in Canberra ever since, and if you look at the original paint, you can tell it has been garaged ever since. I think this must be the most original mk1 cabrio in the country, and it hasn't the slightest hint of rust.
The car is about to tick over 180'000 miles, but had an engine rebuild (by the Beetle Exchange in Canberra) at around 150'000 from memory (can double-check). In the time I have had it, it's been supremely reliable. My only problems have been the ignition switch (now replaced), at one point the carby came loose (fixed also), and the plastic top hose connector on the original radiator cracked when I started the car one morning in -6 degrees (now has brand new and larger radiator). Note that this is the last of the carburetor models, and has a Weber carburetor installed.
Good points:
* Near new vinyl roof (replaced by the previous owner, it has many years left in it and worth over $2000 to replace).
* Totally original paint and interior
* Dash is spotless
* Mechanically very good
* Weber carburetor
* 5 speed manual
* New radiator
* Pioneer CD player
* Garaged all its life (NO RUST)
* No accidents (totally straight - but see door below)
* Many receipts for regular servicing by VW Beetle Exchange and Canberra VW Center Belconnen
* Near new front tyres
* Economical (as little as 6L per 100kms on the highway)
* Interior is very good condition (other than the small driver's side tear)
Bad points:
* Small wear/ tear on drivers seat (from going in and out)
* Damage to the door (see photo) - door still opens and closes but not as well as it used to
* Few small oil seepages but no drips (quoted $300 for parts & labour to fix all up)
* Hinges to the glovebox have given up the ghost (but it still closes and doesn't rattle)
This car gets comments about how original it is every time I take it in for a service.
Asking price is $3,800
I am happy to answer any questions. I am putting the car up for sale here to give enthusiasts first dibs. If it doesn't sell, the car will have to be advertised more widely.
