After warranty you also have a consumer guarantee. You need to lean on this if the car is poorly built and out of the warranty period.
You can have parts and work complete at no charge, long after the warranty has lapsed, if the product is not fit for purpose....

I would not be too concerned for this if it's low km and less than 7 - 8 years old. VW will replace if you ask nicely....Leave a comment:

Update to my earlier post.
VWA came to the party and replaced the water pump at no charge.
My advice if you are in a similar situation is to do the following:- Be familiar with the "Motor vehicle sales and repairs - An industry guide to the Australian Consumer Law".
