Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Back to a VeeDub! It's been 2 years!

Some of you may know me from the mk3 scene, I had a clean slammed Vento and a "ratted" Golf 3-door. Since then I've had 2 Volvos and an AutechVersion Stagea.
So I'm back! And looking at getting another VW, a MK4 Golf this time. Any pointers and advice on MK4's would be greatly appreciated, also any leads or some decent ones for sale. My budget is around $6000.
Let me tell you why I'm back, I had a Volvo XC70, it bored me, so I sold it and bought a Stagea. The stagea had an RB26DETT in it, it was quick and fun. I went on a few Stagea cruises and a Few car meets then I was over it (plus the missus hated it). So I sold it... Then I thought I'd be a good boy and bought myself a Volvo V50 D5 (diesel), we're expecting our first child in June so I thought "YES! This car will last me years to come!" But no, I'm already trying to sell it due to some unforeseen transmission problems. If you're familiar with the MK5 Golf tiptronic setup then you'll know valve bodies aren't cheap nor easy to change...
So I was like, that's it, I'm done. I'm coming back to VeeDub and I'll pay off my credit card debt. I'm thinking manual unmodified GTI but if someone can talk me out of a GTI that would be great lol.

    Nah, MK4 GTI's are okay.
Tune and exhaust and you've got a quick little daily.

EDIT: You'd hate yourself if you got a 1.6 or 2slow

I love my mk4 and wouldn't change it for the world. Coils and a tune and you have a sweet daily, and the aftermarket is huuge for these cars. $6k should get you a fairly decent example, the 1.8t is a fairly bulletproof engine if looked after properly

All good advice. I won't be doing any tuning, exhausts, lowering. Gonna keep it stock. It has to be a car my missus can tolerate lol. The only reason I'd go for a 1.6 or 2.0 is its less maintenance than a turbo, less things to go wrong.... Simplicity.

What about a bora? The v5 is about as slow as a stock gti and no turbo to worry about, plus they come in auto? Boras always seem to be a bit cheaper than the golfs too

I don't like the idea of a V5, seems too "different" and pointless. Plus I'm a wagon/hatch kinda guy.

What about a 2002 VR6 4mo Bora? Plenty of poke and a heap of fun to drive. On a whole new level from the v5
