Addressing my gearbox

Can I ask why someone would swap out and fit a Mk4 Gti box?? its the same apart from some outer casing difference they still haver their troubles too, to be honest in the last 5 yrs I seen more mk4 o2J dramas over the 02R tbh.. Awesome upgrade would be the tough 6 speed. No matter what Vw or Audi you have the Achilles heel is the tranny always has been, but still with the volume on the roads they are not so bad really, I ran my gig for nearly 5 years and didn't see many major lunch jobs, some yes but not lots. First job as an apprentice in 88 was an 020 lunched diff, that was in 88, we now in 2013 and we all still talking gearboxes. , first thing you should try is redline, it realy does make a difference, you have to give it couple hundred ks for it to wick into the bearings and gears.
If you have money to burn then you could upgrade the gears themselves. To conclude apart from the odd case hardening drama or syncro drama I probably seen more issues with ones that have had diffs fitted.

I had the box goop replaced 12 months ago with what I recall was redline. Tbh it made it worse.
I'm keen on buying and swapping if it's cheaper, but I'm not against revamping the current box if feasible.
The LSD, although brilliant for the track, will most likely feel like a lazy $1K put to waste without silly power being channeled through it.
My clutch 'feels' fine but I can appreciate getting the preventative work done whilst its all apart.

I'm thinking I'll talk to the boys at Volkwerke tomorrow to see what I can line up.

I plan on ditching the stance it's currently exhibiting for a more practical and 'fun' height so as to utilise the power available at all times (other than just point and shoot as it happens at the moment).

I'd decide how far I'd want to go power-wise before sorting out the box. If not too far, then fix the box and nothing else. If you're going to go big turbo, then go the 02M conversion (it does weigh about 25kg more), a stronger clutch (light FW if you don't mind chatter) and a TBD or Salisbury LSD.

LOL and seems like yesterday mate. Strange to hear you say that about redline but hey things happen, maybe all done too late with yours perhaps, I know VW had a run of 9N3 with the wrong oil in them from the factory. Anyway you are thinking the right way with it all so im sure you will get a result.

The 02M is tempting, but it would require some consultation from Junior as it hasn't been done in Aus (AFAIK). The extra cog would be nice so long as the ratios work out accordingly. I can only see myself getting more power through a BT upgrade and I'm just not prepared for it yet (I'd rather smooth out my boost delivery first). I'm thinking I'll get the gears fixed, throw on a proper set of shoes and bring the suspension up a notch to improve travel and enjoy the drive.

Fix box. LWFW and clutch. Fit Quaife ATB.

I found being too low up front made the ride a bit rubbish.
In the back, low is fine, I rub over speed bumps, with passengers, on dips at speed, but its fine.
Good tyres up front for traction, good servicing (recently done engine torque mount, spark plugs, turbo bolts and gasket), which most places would not do / know to look for by default.

By the way Ben, according to one of the links that I posted in this thread, dropping the rear of a torsion beam rear end makes it grip better so you end up with more understeer.

my gears are little noisy too which is annoying - just at light throttle at around 2000-2500rpm with 3rd / 4th gear. I heard it may be the bearings. It sounds fine on more throttle and shifts fine.

What's yours like?
