Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Im tired of reading all about the gti and its huge potential, I know the engine is great and the car is light, Ive seen b&b and others on the net claim up to 300kw, cars like that must be insane. so has anyone got any links to videos of hot polos going nutso?

I love my gti and when I have some spare cash Id like to give it some more kick so how about some inspiration.

Well if you're in Sydney you could head out to Goulburn's Wakefield Park to watch Guy in his K04 Polo with LSD. That would be a good start.

Australia was the first to get these cars, so the rest of the world is still maybe catching up. That I'm aware of the US don't get the Polo GTI, I'm sure if they did we'd be seeing some insane builds.

Be a pioneer.. great way to:
        a) Learn whats possible and whats not
        b) Be the first to achieve
        c) find out how deep your pockets are

The biggest problem I come across with people modding cars is they dont set themselves a goal, so never really know where they are heading.

Do you want a track day weapon ? A drag car ? Something for the AutoSalon crowd ?

Nitrous ? Small blower ? Dumped ? Dont just look to the Polo for inspiration, but look at the engineering of all the other hot hatches out there.
Most importantly realise that it wont take long to overcapitalise the car at which stage you are then doing it for love : )

Couldnt agree more with all the repsonses. Another thing is money. if i had a spare 15k i would throw it at the polo in the blink of an eye but as money for me doesnt grow on trees its going to be a slow process.

$15K! You don't need that sort of money to make the Pog a pretty potent little weapon....nor do you want 300Kw sitting up front.

IMO, the Pog is pretty good straight out of the box, and here's some upgrade options:
+ RSB - $235 and you can fit it yourself; settles the handling
+ brake upgrade -- EBC Greens up front (OK, but no cigar) -- c.$180 or, Ferodo 2500s & high performance fluid -- c$350 (fitting the pads is ok, but you'll need a professional fluid bleed, say, $75)
+ tyres -- something with stiffer sidewalls and stickier than the OEMs -- say, $300/corner -- $1,200
+ power upgrade -- any of the chip flashes - $1,200-$2,000 -- will give you more power than you can get to the ground

OK, at this stage you'll have a car with 120Kw atw, which will run sub 15s quarters and corner hard & stop safely -- you've spent around $3,500. Good bang for the buck

Beyond that, and bearing in mind beefa's comments about overcapitalisation, you might want to add
            + coilovers -- $2,200 + fitting
+ bigger dump pipe (c.$600, custom) or full exhaust (c.$1,800, custom)
            + intake (not sure -- maybe $300)
            + Brembo brake kit ($2,800)

At this point you'll have a car with c.140Kw atw -- maybe low 14s (if you can get the power down) and will have spent another $7,000 -- a lot of bucks for not a great deal more bang, IMO -- and you'll never see the money again. n:

Personally, I am happy to spend the $3,500 for the result, because it's still a much better car than anything else I could have bought for $32k OTR with mods (actually, mine's a leather pack with sunroof, so owes me about $37k now, with mods)

If I was going to spend the next $7k, I'd have to be asking myself why I wasn't buying a MkV GTI...or something else

IMO - if you are going to have a half decent crac at fastest all-round polo in aus - the first thing yo would want to do is tyres/wheels, rsb, brakes, coilovers... Get the handling sorted first... Maybe at this stage also strip a bit of weight out of the thing (as all the honda VTEC boys do with their civics - rear seats, boot lining, sound deadning go...)

Then toss the K0x series turbos and go straight for the garrett catalogue (GT28rs or bigger) with matching manifold & full exhaust... After a tune you may be reaching the end of the line for stock management...

In goes Motec/Autronic (or convert to cable throttle and use a microtech), bigger injectors, clutch & LSD... Probably need a new round of brakes aswell!!

Next - i am not sure how strong the o2j gearbox is but you have probably gone through at least one... have to replace it!!

By this time you may have blown at least by my estimates $30k+ but you probaly have the fastest polo in aus!!!

Unless you can do the work all by yourself or get mates rates or sponsorship by a major workshop who will owrk through the build, you will be pissing a lot of money down the drain... The $3,500 option listed above looks like at good deal at this time hehehe
