Hi Guys,
My car 2010 Passat Wagon TDI (highline)
I recently purchased a Heavy Duty towbar from Towbars Australia LINK. Installed 'professionally from XXX.
The next morning when leaving for work, car wouldn't start, battery dead. Airbag fault appeared on MFD. When I called the installer during the day he said the battery may be flat or faulty, then blamed the alternator, etc. Having said that the car was fine previously. When I returned home from work (my wife's car). I decided to jump start the car...worked a treat. I drove it around for 30 mins and came home.
The next day battery was flat again. I jumped started it (again...started fine) and drove to work. When leaving work, the battery was flat again. I jumped started...again, and drove home. When I parked at home, I switched off the car waited for 15-20 seconds and tried to start it again. Car would not start!!!
When the car is running the voltage across the batter is 14.33-14-45V, which leads me to believe that my alternator is ok.
With the car off, the battery voltage is about ~10.5V, which leads me to believe the it is really flat. (or there is a damaged cell...only a theory, haven't had it tested).
When I disconnect the positive terminal and connected a multimeter in series, it read ~2A current draw (seems very high)
Question 1: How much current would my car draw with the ignition off?
To find the source of the drain, I started testing the interior fuses. These are my results;
Fuse no. [Fuse] - Measured current
SC12[10A] - 0.29A
SC15[5A] - 1.43A
SC25[20A] - 0.01A
SC28[30A] - 0.05A
SC37[25A] - 0.1A
I have found a fuse layout on the internet. LINK
Question 2
I don't know how the electrical wiring for the towbar was wired, the installed ensures me that its not he problem. I have brought a new battery, but do not want to install it if I will have the same problem.
Has anyone encountered this issue? Or could anybody how I can resolve this issue. (know any good VW auto elecs.in Melbourne that could help me out?)
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Zoobz
