  • Number plate bolts and nuts for Passat wagon tailgate

I got some tamper resistance screws at a police station open day last week. Trying to replace the number plate screws for my 2008 2.0TDI wagon yesterday. The front ones were easy. However, for the ones at the tailgate, I felt some glue like resistance while unscrewing the old screw. Then I heard some metal dropped behind it. Soon I found out there's a hexagonal hole through the tailgate metal. The screw goes through the hole and is held with a nut (kind of, see the picture) behind. Whoever fitting the number plate used some weak strength glue to hold the nut in place before putting the screw through. When I unscrew it, I kind of tear the glue and the nut just dropped at the back. Took me a bit of time to retrieve them!

Given that the two pieces of nuts are not the same, they are unlikely genuine parts.

    1. Are there genuine parts for such thing? Or the car just comes with two holes and up to the dealers fit whatever they can find with whatever mean they can think of? What do they usually use if not like mine?

    2. Any recommended (easy) way to fit the screws since it is quite hard to reach the back of it ? Self-tightening nuts, rather than re-use the old ones?

    Thanks.
