Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Drop in replacement speakers for Golf Mk3 cabrio?

Anyone changed the front door speakers without needing to make any modifications? I heard they're 6.5" but i need to be sure.
My budget is around $300 (self-install), i'm looking at the focal basic line

Also, any easy way to put in standard 1" tweeters into the dash speaker slot? I'm considering just leaving em in there, they don't seem too terrible

Powered from a 4x50w HU, not really looking to spend much more because of the sq loss from the car being a cabrio

Unless you can convince me otherwise..

I have put a set of 6.5" Pioneer Bullet splits in the front. Didnt require any modification to fit them in the front doors, can even use the original speaker grill to cover them up. I got the splits into the dash speaker slot aswell. Used the original plastic section that holds the tweeter in, cut the hole a bit bigger and used that to hold my new tweeter, worked a treat. The cross over is hidden in the door pocket quite neatly aswell.

It is well worth replacing them if you go a to a pair of new splits. They are pretty poor and dont have a seperate cross over either, so will have trouble matching them up with another newer speaker in the door.

yeh i thought my tweeter holes were empty too, until i pulled them out and found two cardboard things that some people apparently call speakers.

YEp. Our standard speakers are 6.5'. Of cause get the splits !!! otherwise it would sound very wrong, standard tweet with Focal !

You aware there is a current group buy with Dynamat bulk pack !! They give you major improvemnts !

I put Infinity Kappa's in my GTI, a really nice speaker
However the stock speaker grill no longer fits in place (which is a common problem for multiple brands of speakers in the Mk3) and I had to cut and modify my speaker grill to fit over the speakers

As for the tweaters, I mounted them on a piece metal, which looks tacky, but that doesn't matter when the cover is on. I can bend the metal as well to point the tweaters in whatever direction I want

I hear Sony speakers fit without giving grill problems

I have alpine type-x splits in the front, altho the tweets have been drilled into the door card (i wanted them down there). It looks mildly retarded but it sounds nice enough.

My rears are empty, but would like something there, one day.

                  Thanks guys =)

I managed to find a focal 2ch Power amp for $250, so i decided to match em with Focal K2 165KR. Freeway audio said i can just bring em back if they dont fit and i can trade em in for something thinner. Luckily they (just) fit in there!

This is a temporary solution, so just trying to make them make a sound somehow. My next car, probably a golf mk4 will have everything professionally installed, sealing the doors and everything
The car being a cabrio adds too much noise to bother about doing something serious anyway

I'm going with coons88's idea for mounting the tweeter, except when i finally got the original one out, i found 2 sets of leads in there. What do they connect to?
I noticed in the door speaker there's another set that leads to something as well but it's been taped up, i guess by whoever changed the head unt..
Dazzled, i thought there was no crossover in the original system

I'm leaving the original cabling in there, so i can easily refit the original speakers when i sell it.
It'd be nice to know what they connect to instead of yanking things out randomly

The cross over is built in to the factory speakers as far as I am aware
I would recomend that you run new wires through the door up to your tweeters, and as you say, leave the factory wiring alone so you can swap it back to standard easily. That is what I did
