Spend a grand for a proper exhaust and tuning by someone who knows the timing tricks. You'll be surprised because a properly tuned 8v is no slouch. However, you have to remember it'll only ever be as quick as you drive because the computer runs interference against abuse. It calculates averages and it only gives as much as you typically use.

Personally I think its time to start treating Mk2s as collectables. I'd always choose one in nice nick with a pretty standard specification before one that has been significantly modified.

I respect your opinion but I strongly dissagree with it.

*A car that there are less than 1000 of in the world is a collectable.

*A 10g VW should be enjoyed. I think it's a bit rediculous when people boast about how little kms are on or how original their "relatively" low cost cars are. Imagine if in 20 years time someone says "oh my 1998 hyandai excel sprint has only 55thousand kms on it from the factory"

I say modify it all you want, if sometime down the track you chose to sell it and lose value, who cares, you will have probably gained more enjoyment from that modification than the lost value of resale. And the car will have more character and more of a story to tell.
