  • Another wheel choice opinion thread (mk6 GTI)

Been staring at wheels far too long, and figured I'd throw it out for second opinion.

Car is a red mk6 GTI that will shortly be on a 20mm spring drop.

Deciding to stick with my existing 225/40 x 18 tyres, 19s are cool but I'm fine with a little more rubber in the sidewall.

Choices are down to two classics:

BBS CH black edition (with silver lip) 18 x 8 ET50
    OZ Superturismo LM in graphite 18 x 8 ET48

I reckon most are familiar with the wheels, but a shot of each on a red GTI is below - though note I'd be using standard black BBS centre caps, not the red ones.

(and yes I know at the end of the day the only relevant opinion is mine!)

    Oz's.

CH's look smaller than they actually are and weigh a fair bit more.

Alternatively, some Gallardo front's would look ace.

I must admit the OZs were my choice, seems like the (small) vote so far 100% backs my choice.

Now to consider the hassles of importing a set v buying locally.. the difference isn't as great on these wheels as some of the others I've priced up, I'm thinking the local backup and risk of damage travelling internationally might sway a local buy.

Exact same two that I was looking at - have decided to go BBS CH because I just feel they look better but there's certainly a lot of good reasons to go the Oz's. They are a bit lighter, a LOT cheaper and not as common as the CH's.
Definitely import - its not a huge saving but its still at least couple of hundred and even more if you get it as a tyre and wheel package and if you want to go down the path of two shipments to avoid Import duties there's again a bit of a saving. Have a look at my thread I posted up in this section earlier for the link to the site and my calculations on costs.

I do like the BBSs, but as per team_v, they look a little small/chunky in the 18 size that I am sticking with, and I was not convinced they look right on a red car (with the lip). If I had a black beast like yours, or a grey/silver, even white, then I think it works a whole lot better.

And yes in this instance the bonus is the weight and price, while still being a good quality branded wheel.

I've run the numbers on both scenarios.. agreed it was a reasonable saving initially on the import side, but the local price got sharpened considerably since then and the difference became minor - so in my particular case I am ok with sticking local.

But for anyone hunting for wheels - DEFINITELY check out the UK (Alloywheels.com, Performance Alloys) or the US (Tirerack) for comparison. I will be revisiting this situation when I need tyres as well.. I've still got a lot of life left in my current ones so am just ordering alloys for now.

So who's the local with the sharpened pencil?

My vote is CH's. Reason being easier to clean with less spokes & i think the chunky look suites a small golf >D

I'm still going via AMG; the price I'm paying is basically within 10% of my estimates on buying in from the UK (or 3% if you compare apples with apples and include the import duty/GST). I'm happy with that - I get local support for any issues and they confirmed they check the order/wheels over before forwarding to me.

The two guys I dealt with were Ryan and Leeson, they're happy to talk over deals and sharpen prices where they can.
