  • Installing R/Dash Licence LED with Ballast

Put something together as it may help others install their LED Licence Lights with the Ballasts to avoid any errors.
The ballasts aren't necessary on all models, but in my case (MY11 Caddy), without them would give me a bulb error, so had to go through these extra little steps to make it happen.

The LED's are from R/Dash - Bought on Aliexpress. Suitable for Caddy/Passat/Jetta, where the light housing cannot be removed and replaced. Make sure if you order, to ask them to send the Ballasts together with the LEDs.

    R/Dash and Ballasts

1 - Remove any lining to get to the rear of the light housing to expose the wires where we are going to attach the ballasts. The Caddy is quite easy, as there are only a few clips, together with a plug and a couple of bolts which then makes it easy to remove the plastic where the licence lights are. Other cars might be a little bit more difficult, but manageable.

2 - You can now see the licence light housings. Brown wire is negative, green/grey is positive. There is no right wire to connect each of the ballast wires to, as there is no Polar difference. There is a diagram below to show where to connect the ballast to.

3 - Splice the wires and solder the wires! If you don't know how to solder, get someone who knows.. you don't want to burn yourself.

4 - Use some electrical tape to case the solder joints.

5 - Screw in your new R/Dash LEDs, and put everything back on the vehicle.

6 - Finished! No Errors now!
