Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hello from Geelong(Vic)

I have been lately contemplating a change of cars and want to down size from my current manual FG Falcon to a smaller car with auto/DSG.
I've always had manuals and I'm becoming lazy(and older)so that's why it's also in for a change.I've never had an awd car and I have been looking at the new WRX as well but after having sat in the MKVII Golf R I really lost interest in the WRX.I was simply smitten by the interior quality of the R.I have also looked at the GTI with performance pack and it does look quite interesting.Although the GTI may prove to be a little of a come down in power from the Falcon?
I suppose my main concern is the reliability of both the GTI and R models.I know that most of the recent problems dogged the 7 speed (dry clutch?)DSG
I've decided for the time being to do as much research as possible and take a test drive only when I'm on the cusp of making a decision to buy the car.
Anyway,if someone has experienced both the GTI PP and the Golf R please comment,I would appreciate any opinion.

P.S The Golf R that I looked at was the base R(no options) with DSG,the dealer was asking just under $60,000 on the road.........could I do better?
Working...
