Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hello from Dean in Canberra

Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself and my new ride!

I'm in my mid 40's, live in Canberra and have just replaced an '09 FG Falcon G6E Turbo with a '10 Mk6 Golf GTi (manual, Candy White, Jacky fabric, Denvers, 66K km, FSH). I had been looking at getting into a Mk7 GTi but the combination of no PP manuals here and the wait for the spec I want meant that I decided to pick up a used Mk6 instead for about half the price of a new Mk7. My GTi will be my daily driver, sharing a garage with an original 1990 MX5.

First impressions: fast! Really fast! It might be 1.5 sec slower for 0-100 than the Falcon turbo in published road tests but it sure doesn't feel it to drive. Quality feel and build (not a single squeak), lovely torquey engine, pin-sharp handling. Still getting used to the very bitey brakes and firm ride, but otherwise I'm an absolute convert!

My GTi still has 6 weeks warranty factory left on it and I had been tossing up between extending warranty for 2 years or throwing on an APR stage 1 tune. However, as I have been quoted $4,350 for the 2 year extended warranty (!!!) that has made the decision for an APR tune very easy!

The next priority will probably be to replace the Denvers (on Goodyear F1A2s) with Detroits if I can find some in decent condition, as well as a couple of audio upgrades. No plans to go overboard as it's likely to be replaced with a Mk7 within 18 months or so.

Anyhow, thanks all for sharing your stories and wisdom on VWW, it made my purchasing decision easy and has been a great source of info about these great cars. See you on the forums!
