Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New to Forums - have nothing yet...that's why I'm here!

    Hi all,

My names Matt. My lease on my 2009 Subaru Liberty recently ended and I am now looking to purchase a new vehicle. I am after a large car that is practical for going to the shops, the hardware store and the occasional trip to/on the beach and up the mountains. For reasons I cannot even answer I am reticent to purchase the usual Toyota option (Hilux, Prado, Landcruiser) and dislike pretty much anything from Ford or Holden (Bad experiences, generic and poor design).

I have been eyeing off an Amarok for well over a year now and now that the auto has been released I've been to the dealers a few times to check them out in great detail and book a test drive (or three ). However the model I am after, the Highline, is in my opinion VERY expensive for what feels like, and effectively is, a work ute. I know the car is great, the engine is superb and the factory fittings leave most of the competition for dead, but I'm sorry - a leather steering wheel does not make this trade ute feel like a luxury SUV - which is what the price suggests!

Now, the way I see it is I can get a 2nd hand Touareg while reasonably low km's on it for well under the cost of a new Amarok...and it'd feel a lot more like it's worth the cash. They apparently handle themselves quite well off-road (disclaimer - I'll never do any hardcore off road work. Just gentle beach cruising and up to the snow really).

So I'm here to figure out what my best option is, if I can go for a much older model with reasonable km on the clock and get good value for money, what I can replace or fix aftermarket to update it a bit and extend it's longevity more and so on. The way I see it the older a car is the more inclined I would be to improve it

Still all research at the moment but hopefully I can figure out what path I can go down on these fine forums

    Thanks and chat soon!

    - Matt
