Well, I am unfortunately VW free at the moment having sold my Mk2 Golf GTi about two years ago just before moving to the Pilbara in north west WA. The pilbara is really four wheel drive country so I sold my Golf to buy a Hilux (which cracked its head) before selling it and getting a GU Patrol.
I learnt to drive in my parent's '82 Kombi which was a blast and have taken that on quite a few mountain biking and camping trips. My first car was a '74 Passat TS in orange. It was bog stock with an almost original interior and minimal rust. After about 5 years with that, I stumbled across a Mk2 Golf GTi for sale and bought that while still at Uni. I ended up selling the Passat after having both cars for almost a year, though I now regret that sale.
The Golf ended up with a fully custom interior (I worked at a trim shop) with a false floor with perspex window above one amp, doors in the boot area showing the other two amps for the twin subs. It had 16" rims with Pirelli P-Zero's, Koni adjustable shocks, and Eibach lowered springs. It had a fairly standard 8V motor with 5 speed manual box.
While I was working on the Mk2 suspension I found a '76 Mk1 Golf for sale for $200 and bought that as a run around while I sorted out a few niggling issues with the Mk2. The Mk1 became the share house car with everyone driving it while there cars were out of action. All it needed was a plugged brake line for one of the rear drums and a new master cylinder after it failed catastrophically one day (thankfully I was braking hard for a missed turn rather than to avoid an accident!). The Mk1 ended up turning into a full resto project that I was doing for a friend but I lost motivation and ended up giving it away for free.
After having sold the Mk2 and given away the Mk1, I am VW free but keeping my eyes out for a B1 Passat to do up so if any have one for sale in WA, I'm keen.
I'll be posting photos shortly.
