Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • first post dilemma

I have a 1989 Mkll 1.8 8v RV Engine Golf. The Dilemma is the exhaust manifold. I have had a mechanic and an exhaust guy take a look and it seems the Pre Burner(EGR) ? may be rattling inside a manifold or there is a small leak from the manifold. The real problem seems to be access. Being so close to the firewall means they can't see the bolts that are to be removed so the whole engine needs to be taken out to gain access. It looks like a $600 to $1,000 problem because of all the labour for what maybe a simple replacement of a part
. Anyone else had similar problems and a cheaper fix? As this car has only 111,000 K's and is otherwise running well. I would like to keep using it as a daily runner. The only downside at the moment is cold starting because of previous mentioned failure and it was suggested I turn up the idle to compensate?
