MY10 125kw TDI Highline Stationwagon
White: In my wifes words "I don't want to pay $1000 for a colour"
RNS510 GPS
No other options as yet but thinking of the towbar and some form of Bluetooth adaptor.
Would have loved to have speced up the gadgetry but no budget from the Mrs.
My story:
I am a sports car guy. Apart from my first car being a Kingswood stationwagon, all my cars have been either sporty or have had a sporty feel. In order there was the 1977 Kingswood Stationwagon, 1983 Toyota Supra, 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2003 Nissan 200sx Spec R GT, 1997 Golf Gti, 2007 Mazda RX-8 and now the Passat.
My wife and I returned from the UK 2 years ago with the plan of getting married and starting a family. I was promised a sports car on my return and bought the RX-8 (I love this car). Unfortunately for my car situation (fortunately for us) the family part of the equation has kicked off and I have had to sell the RX-8.
Why the Passat:
About 3 years ago I spent a week in Italy with my Mum and Dad. We hired a car and drove around the bottom half of the country. I was lucky enough to be given a Alfa Romeo 159 Sportswagon 1.8tdi and had the time of my life. Regardless of how many toilet stops my parents needed or the moans from my mother in the passenger seat as we flew down Italian country roads I just loved the car. I had it in my mind that this was the car for me. It really changed my opinion of both diesel engines and sportswagons in general.
However…. When we found out my wife was expecting we went and had a look at family wagons. I drove the Passat 125 diesel DSG and on the same day from drove the Alfa 159 1.8tdi diesel Auto and my opinions changed. I was expecting the Passat to be a clean and pleasant car and the Alfa to be lively and gorgeous. What I actually found was that the useless automatic gearbox in the Alfa completely killed the fun of the car and made it an unresponsive lump and the Passat was a joy to drive (and was such a nice place to be). I still think the Alfa 159 has got to be the best looking medium sized car on the market and let out a small wimper everytime I see one but my mind was made up that day that the Passat was the car for me.
We also looked at. Honda CRV, Mazda 6, Ford Mondeo, Subaru Liberty/Outback and found that the Passat was in the same price band the car just blows them away. They all look like a normal "Australian" car where the Passat just has class. I would put the Passat in a similar bucket as the Audi A4, BMW 3 series etc and it is a bargain against these cars. I would like the A4 Avant but at $15-$20k more than the Passat I could not justify the jump.
Anyway enough from me. I am happy to find a community of VW owners where I can bounce questions and ideas off.
Thanks
