Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Newbie Multivan owner

Hi, my names Mark and I have had my Multivan for the past 10 months. We got the Multivan after deciding it would be the most comfortable and economical car to run for a family of six. Bought the car ex-government, 3 year old & 100Km, with a full VW dealer service history. Love the car.

So far I've had to replace the discs but other than that its been good. UNTIL, shifting started to become rough with the dreaded thump when it shifts (6 speed tiptronic (ZF?) box) gears.

First mechanic said sealed box, no need for a service. Researched this and found it to be a load, and went to mechanic number 2. After new filter and oil change, gearbox rapidly deteriorated. Sometimes no forward power at all, sometimes massive slipping, increased thumping and activation of limp mode. Has been back to the shop 3 times in two weeks. Currently still in the shop after having a sensor within the gearbox replaced. Has had all solenoids checked, and now suspicion is falling on the torque converter. Car runs beautifully for the first 10 minutes, shifts like a dream but once it warms up the problems start. Has anyone else out there experienced the same problems and found the solution? I dont want to OK a new torque converter if its something wildly different.

Happy to answer any and all questions about symptoms etc if it helps getting my beloved Multi back on the road.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mark
